No. The irrisponsible owner, who failed to control the dog, should be Jailed!

How to define an attack.

Post by andy2007 »

That's a good point John. How do we define an attack?
Personally, I think that if the skin is broken, then it should be classed as an attack.

Having said that: I don't think that a dog should be put down, unless there is a history of attacks. Instead The irrisponsible owners should get a lengthy Jail Sentence! And the dog should be retrained, and re-homed, with a responsible owner.

Yes, dogs are territorial, and will repel invaders (from their point of view). It really comes down the the amount (if any) of force they use. If the dog goes for your clothes, and not your limbs. Or better still, just barks agressively. That's usually sufficient to make someone leave in a hurry. But they need proper training, to make sure that they don't actually attack someone. And not all owners are responsible enough, to do that.

I've never heard of them. But it is a good point. It doesn't matter what type of animal it is. If it attacks, then the owner, should be dealt with severely. Why should Posties have to fear for their safety on a regular basis, just because some people get pets, that they can't be bothered to train properly?!?!? :evil/mad :arrrghhh :evil/mad

law will not discriminate dogs by their looks.

which is most likely to nip? above or below?

obvious choice would be to have a post box by the gate or enterance instead of going through the trauma of having to put a dog down. it may be because of one little thing happening by chance.

savage attack is a huge difference between nips and bites. stick an arm out quickly to a snarling dog and it's obvious it's going to bite because it thinks you're attacking it.

obviously common sense will tell to arrange to have the dog(s) away from view on delivery times, but this cannot be achieved anyway as it is determined whther the address has any mail and fluctuations in delivery time.

dogs used for guards are not sociable so it's fruitless crouching down spouting out cute words to calm it down, as it probably will think you are submitting to you
you can try. some dogs will recognise a familiar figure, and may actually get used to a postie, and become placid.

usually dogs are sensitive to voice. their behaviour comes down to how they were brought up from pups.

other delivery people are just in the same boat. milkman, bread, fish, butcher. probably dogs don't like posties and gas people or the rentman. and politicians cos they can smell them a mile off.

most dogs are placid if roaming the streets, they mind their own business. it's usually smaller dogs that do the nipping, like jack russels. they always go for the trousers. when they are on their own patch, things become different.

i'd rather see dogs freely roaming the street in their own natural habitat than being chained to a post all day. when people understand animals, they get used to them. but the public perception of animals is usually fuelled by press and media, and create fear.

it's not a case of how well a dog has been trained, their instincts are territorial. maybe, if a postie walks down a pathway calm and easy, a dog will be placid. but if a postie is rushing and aggressive walking, then the dog thinks it's being attacked??

Thing is with RM expecting you to average 2.1 miles per hour over the whole walk :left: which in reality means 4.1 to allow for opening gates , stopping to post etc, all posties walk fast and aggresively - we are in a loose loose situation.

You could be right. Although I still think that a well trained, and properly looked after dog, is unlikley to do more than bark, or possibly go for your clothes, rather than your limbs.

But it doesn't alter the fact, that in my opinion. No dog should be killed, because they attacked. Unless, they have a history of doing so, and therefore have been proved to be a serious threat to the Public. It's the owners who should be punished. Not the dogs!

If they're that bad, then they should be covered by the Dangerous Dogs Act. And even if they aren't. No responsible owner would keep one in a Residential Area, because of the danger they pose.

So again, it comes down to irrisponsible owners. :hmmmm

yes, the better trained usually results in that. the best of trained dogs are likely to be startled and have a turn, and that can't be the owners fault.

say for example, a dog is laying down or just sniffing around the garden as they do. maybe, a dog gets used to the postie who comes through the gate as usual. maybe, just maybe, the postie did something different. after delivering next door, the postie decided not to go down the path but to make a short cut and step over a wall making a noise or brushed against a bush inbetween, startling the dog. the dog won't know who it is and thinks it's an intruder, so it's obvious the dog is going to do something whether it's a jack russell or an alsation. maybe it wasn't the regular postie who took the short cut. that's hardly the fault of the owner or the dog.

mst dogs are under control. howver much it's under control, it's going to bark at the letterbox, bark at this, bark at that. that is how they are. they probably been doing it all the time.

when a dog bites all the time, that is where things have to be looked at. some people don't go into a property because the dog barks and they don't like the dog barking. who's at fault there? the owner, the dog or the person who is visting?

town dogs are different to city dogs. and town dogs are different to village dogs. like people i suppose.

the case against the postie who severed an arm was an extreme case i agree. those dogs were bred for security, not social dogs, and they had the pack instinct in them. in that circumstance, rm would be right in requesting a safe way to deliver. but everybody will have to be treated the same way. if you request to one, you have to request to all. there is no middle ground or picking and choosing who or where. it would be ideal to pick out the most extreme to start, but why should everyone else have to suffer cos of a few? of course people like to be protected.
least forgetting a tiny pekingnese could be as likely to bite a little bit if it esacaped from the kitchen while housewife opens the door to go into the garden, and in the meantime, the posty is coming up the path. chances are a small dog will go back into the kitchen than be confronted by a pair of size nines walking up the path. but the potential is there.

it would be good to have postboxes by a gate. as blue terrier knows, germany have had theirs like that for decades. same as most of europe because they like to be private people and dont like people entering their land. bit like them usa post boxes. i can't see it happening in this country. one reason will be that the mail will be robbed, as europeans have more respect for other peoples things, or at least used to.
