I care about the customers and the people i deliver to every day and so do most part time younger people. In my office its more the older people who think the jobs going downhill so why should we care. And you must be strong to be able to carry that huge bag of potatoes on your shoulder maybe you should take out the heaviest walk in your office ?

Bloody hell im a huge moaner so must have a 55lb bag of spuds on my shoulder.
The comment was towards the people who complain about the seniority system. I think it's a good and proper way to do it.

Again a junior boy is upset with the system of seniority well tough. Those who are senior to you have done all the sh*t jobs you speak of years ago and as you'll find if you stick around when you start to get creaky knees from years out on the road then it will be your time to move onto a easier job. But daresay your whinging will see you rise to a 'manager' so you'll sit down all day and drink tea :cuppa untill then just remember that man /woman has done his bit and now deserves a little respect :arrrghhh

here, here. it appears that only those without seniority moan about seniority, and what an unfair system it is

back to the original post, i can honestly sympathise you.
young lady at our place had a similar problem, i advised her to do her bit, make a note of whats happening get the people on frames nearby to act as witnesses if you get moved off, and go home and if she got any probs let me know. So when she was approached by the lino for bringing back/ leaving mail undelivered i got him and 2 of his colleagues and challenged the 3 of them to deny that the lass had spent 30-45 mins on each of their lines before being left to do the walk in question walk. I said to them "look i'll save you a lot of time here, i have about 10-15 witnesses who saw her working on a frame near them yesterday so we are happy to answer questions but we would like a more formal proceedure with note takers and the like, and she would like to tape the interview for her ease of referance".
things have gone quiet since then, i spoke to the lino concerned a number of times and he is happy with her reasons.

well ive been in the job for 8 years, in my d.o. all the new starters on 24hr contracts are given their own walks (for ease of getting them prepped for them), while ive been busted down to leave reserve....nice

My problem with resigns and seniority is that when the first 20 or whatever get their easier duty they then forget that the rest of the office, especially part-time staff and new starts, are having problems and will not support their struggle.

Seniority only works if the rest of office issues are solved first.

Duties are achievable and fair has to come first.

Im sorry but i've done a fair few years but i still get a little fed up when staff are pushed from pillow to post at the expense of others,we have firm duties that decide for themselves at what they are going to take out or not take out as long as they are getting home nearly 2 hours before the rest of us so it's a no no if anyone over in that section gets taken of what they are doing
but in the town section i have seen staff ping ponged from 1 delivery to the other with no consideration at all and get so very upset,i have listened to managers stand and say oh he/she dont matters lets move that one with that one they can move and lets see if we can upset those 2 just for a laugh i kid you not it goes on all the time in our office, the managers have thier little pals.

Just had a stage 1 warning yesterday and in the course of the interview brought up the fact that at 60 with only 5 years service I have carried out 45 different duties and was getting pi$$ed off. It was agreed to try and work out something a little more regular. When I looked at the duties for next week the next day I discovered that they want me to learn two new ones, making it 45 duties in 5 years. Having listened to some fixed duties moaning about their revisions - people here have only done a few jobs in twenty years - what's fair about that? What's the most duties you have done out of interest?

matt3c wrote:Why the hell should old timers get all the easy walks ? Why do they deserve it ? do we not all do the same job ? some people come out with absolute bollocks on here, just because they have been here a few years longer they think they deserve everything. well they dont, its not our fault they never got out while they were younger and are all bitter about chances they could of had and whats happening now with the royal mail and all that rubbish. This is a job we get paid better than most other jobs and everyone who works for the royal mail should do exactly the same. No wonder there are splits in offices up and down the country with an attitude like that!
I started 24 yrs ago like most jnr boys I was lumbered with all the s**t jobs on different shifts, now I've got a bit of seniority, but I'm still out of the top 100 in my office, but I'm able to choose what shift I work on and can sign for an ok duty and have a fairly good chance of a decent spot in the Summer holidays,
I would like to ask you in 20 yrs whether you would be happy to give up the seniority you have earned, how would you feel about the job you've been doing for years being allocated to a newbie and you being put on a different job every day because you have experience in deliveries, how if after 20yrs service you had you're summer leave allocated to you in October?
Seniority is something we've earned through all the years of service we've put in, it's worked for years. It's seems that the only ones who want to get rid of seniority are junior boys who don't like the jobs that they have to do now and want it easier, don't forget that the senior men of today had to put up with all the crap jobs you're doing now many years ago themselves. If you've got a s**t duty now how do you like the idea of doing it until you hit retirement with no chance of getting a better one in the future as that is what it seems you want to happen by getting rid of seniority

Yes well said westlondonpostie....I've been doing the job nearly 2 years and must have done over 40 duties but on the last resign about 6 months ago I was lucky enough to get my own duty as a number of duties had been kept for 32.5hr staff and 25hr staff. Now as you can imagine the duties which got chosen for part-timers were the worst walks in the office which a lot of people (with more seniority than myself) turned their nose up at, but I bit the bullet and chose the one closest to where I live out of the 3 remaining and it's a rough area and takes nearly 4 hours to complete on a heavy day but after a while now I've got to know the customers it doesn't seem quite as bad. But I would happily give it up at the next resign to someone with more seniority than myself if they wanted it as I think they have earned the right to have the pick of walks after years of putting up with all the s**t. And I know in years to come I will be the one with some seniority and have that choice. Seniority in my opinion is the only fair way to do things in RM.

Good on you Ghost, every year you put in you're seniority will go up and it will get a bit better, we've just had a revision imposed on us and as we refused to sign management allocated duties and a lot of us senior men have got screwed, yours truly included, glad to know that my big mouth has got up my ex managers nose the fat tosser :dance

so it would be ok for somebody less senior to get screwed??????

this is my problem. Seniority seems to also bring selfishness. When all duties are achievable and fair then have a resign based on seniority and not before. NOBODY should be getting screwed to keep the old timers happy.

I'll repeat, if you cannot do the job.....get out. I owe you nothing
