Chance of a job 'spoiled'by Mail

A Ludlow man today accused the Royal Mail of spoiling his job hunting chances after his CV and application was damaged and returned in the post.

Ken Ledbrook was horrified to find his CV and job application had been returned in a clear plastic bag with all his personal details on show.

Mr Ledbrook had applied for a job as an IT technician at the Hereford Academy and when he called them to explain he was told it was too late and the closing date had been and gone.

He said: “I got this back on Wednesday. The envelope was destroyed and the CV was in a clear plastic bag.

“My details were on show, it has got everything there. In a way I feel that my privacy has been invaded. Anyone could have taken it.

“Anyone who is into this ID theft thing could probably get something from it.”

Mr Ledbrook said there was no explanation offered except for an apology printed on the plastic bag.

He said he posted the CV last Friday to get there on Saturday. The closing date was noon on Monday.

He said: “With jobs being so hard to get at the moment I just did not have a chance. It is really unfair that I did not get the chance to have a shot at the job.”

A spokesman for Post Office Ltd said they apologised for any distress cau-sed, and added: “We would urge the customer to retain the damaged packaging and to contact our customer service department with full de-tails of posting and the add- ress it was intended for so that we can make inquiries.”

Well that'll teach him not to buy shoddy envelopes next time he applies for a job.
And anyway there's enough decent jobs going in Ludlow without him travelling all the way to and from Hereford each day.

If his application for a job was so important, why leave it 'til Friday to post it. A lot of our companies don't want or need a Saturday delivery, so it wouldn't have got there 'til Monday anyway. As for getting it there by midday, he should have used Special Delivery as we finish work between 2.30 and 3.00 during the week, and so it might have got there too late anyway.
Why couldn't he just avoid all this hassle, and have posted his cv on Wednesday or Thursday ?

Surely someone could have put a piece of card, or paper, between his CV, and the clear plastic. So the details would have been hidden. It's not like there's any shortage of scrap paper or card.

Don't know about that. He sounds like the kind of guy that would then claim that it had been tampered with.
The simplest thing he could have done is
a) use a decent envelope
b) use special delivery, if it was time sensitive
c) post it earlier.
There isn't a day goes by that some newspaper or other is blasting RM for poor service, so he must be one of the few people living in a bubble.
It reminds me of the old phrase "the cheque is in the post", if all else fails, blame Royal Mail.

is there any reference to using a shoddy envelope in the story? i would have gone ape myself... probably i would have done the same myself posting it on friday so it will get there for monday..

"with alll his personal details on show" - well if he's daft enough to include his bank account number and PIN on the CV then he wouldn't have got the job anyway.

We have received post at our business address on a regular basis that is damaged without the courtesy of a plastic bag, you dont even know if items are missing. Plus it seems all our mailing has to go via Wrekin Housing Trust and vice versa. Royal Mail has gone to the dogs over the last few years I am surprised it still has a royal seal of approval.

If you really want to know it’s going to get there, deliver it yourself or assume it may not get there. Even then your bus, train or own car might break down and you can’t blame that as it were on purpose. I once had applications lost in the post for 2 weeks after they were due in, things like that happen - unless you postman doesn’t like you, its unfortunate chance, sad but unfortunate and a bit desperate for the paper to use you as a story like this.

Did you get your postage back? Name one other company that can do EXACTLY the service that RM offers. Just one will do!
