the purpose of the bbc is to be free from commercial interests, and still is an institution as it was before. best kept well away from business use and to serve the people paid by the people, not paid by businesss to constantly bombard us with products that bears no relevence. bbc is not bad, bit poor at times - inflated prices paid to presenters which goes against the grain of principle.

licence fee is a bit hefty now, which i don't agree with personally.. if advertising did come to bbc, it be best if they show them after a programme ends, not like the format itv uses.. film starts, ten minutes later adverts come on..nobody likes to watch adverts as such, maybe the odd one or two. bbc wouldn't be able to show many anyway without losing quality of a programme, programme times will have to be cut to slot in advertising

actually been fined - £60 pound fine with £45 costs for having a B&W licence for a colour TV , didn't argue the toss or give daft excuses as some do . I suppose we were a soft target as I lived in a private tower block , TV reception was dreadful anyway off the communal aerial , it was a previously unletable council block sold to a firm for £1 called Merseypride ( Hatton & land deals ) that was " refurbished " . Dodgy cowboy contractors had shorted the wires that had a splitter on from the CCTV for the flats entrance .


Somebody understandably very discreetly put a Sky Dish in on his balcony , but some stuck up bitch from the Penthouse flats on the flats management committee shopped him making out it was some sort of eyesore which was laughable . He went to solicitors but the problem is under leasehold , these management firms can run up court costs and you just can't afford to take them on .

Never ever go Leasehold !

I Pleaded guilty by post , my mates mother-in-law got hammered in court - £250 or thereabouts and again , she held her hand up .

I did have a notice put through the door about not having a colour licence , I was on a 12 hr shift so I missed them , I bought a B&W portable cash from Argos , apparently by law ? , retailers have to supply details to the authorities when they sell tellies . So they left me alone for 7 or so years .

what i always find wrong with the licence fee is that even if someone does not watch bbc channels ar all, they still have to pay. if i wanted a viewing device to solely watch dvds/videos, i have to pay. it be a mamoth task to determine who uses tv for what. probably you'd get people taking advantage saying i only want the tv to watch sky and end up watching bbc after all for nowt. a television is an apparaus that receives a signal - licence fee is for apparatus that receives a signal. no way out of it.

bbc is democratic in one respect, and undemocratic on the other.

apparently ?? , people are getting round the licence fee by just watching iPlayer & C4 OD on the internet . The other way is torrents , but that's risky i.e. horror stories about Limewire due to some nerd or 15 year old in his bedroom with a grudge against the world wreaking malware havoc that the security doesn't always catch .

To be fair if you go to the states , you can have umpteen channels but utter sh**e and adverts every 5 minutes , as for Europe , remember the Fast Show and Channel 9 - Scorchio ! , that isn't that exaggerated .

ITV is getting very dumbed down , " reality " this and that with the most unreal people you could meet , Care in the Community karoake shows , stupid soaps etc .

lol i remember the fast show.. tops, always made me laugh.. i think i should have bought the series dvd by now, never got round to it. it's nearly 10 years now since it was on.

funny enough, a tv licence is required for a computer cos tv cards slots allow people to watch erm tv... what about mobile phone streaming? i phone.

lucky we don't have to have one licence for each bit of apparatus. tv, portable, pc. some people have 3 tellys. cost a fortune lol.

was sitting on a bench yesterday in swansea.. castle gardens. to my right, there is a 40 foot by 20 tv screen. probably most city centres have these now. waste of cash if you ask me. would like to get away from the everyday things just for a moment or two. no relaxing now, constantly bombarded with information. what was on the news? think they were banging on about afghanistan. funny how they only got bbc news channel up. i would laugh my sox off if some p0rn came on by accident lollllllllllllll

ah.. forgot about this point.. a licence is required for apparutus that receives a tv signal. meaning that a video recorder receives a signal. so does freeview box, digital box. even a dvd player with built in receiver.

so the theory of watching a video only is diminsihed.. the only thing i can think of is having a portable dvd player. don't think they let people download from channel 4 or bbci. they can't be saved into a pc and burned onto dvd later. stuff recorded from tv transferred onto dvd is the usual that happens on youtube etc.

not sure what it says about watching pre-recorded things on pc. pre-recorded isn't receiving a signal, it's just viewing
