Postal staff to strike for three days

Postal workers started three days of strikes in London today in a row
over jobs, pay, and cuts, causing disruption for thousands of businesses
in the capital.

The Communication Workers Union accused Royal Mail of reducing the
pay of staff and implementing other cuts, which it said was affecting
services.

Deputy general secretary Dave Ward said the company had failed to take
up an offer of a three month moratorium on industrial action so talks on
modernisation could be held.

He added "Royal Mail management is the biggest block to modernisation.
When presented with the best deal we - or any union - can offer, for
three months of no industrial action and negotiation on modernisation,
they refuse.
Management seem to be sulking because the prospect of privatisation
and increased executive pay has disappeared. Royal Mail and the
Government cannot ignore this situation, which is growing worse every
day."

The union said it would hold a national day of action on 17 July, which
would combine industrial action and demonstrations.

Delivery workers in London were striking today, distribution staff will be
out tomorrow, and mail centres will strike on Friday.

A Royal Mail spokesman said "We want to discuss how to implement the
agreement in London, as has happened in units in the rest of the UK.
The union refuses to do so."
