Postal strike in Weston one step closer

POSTAL workers in Weston have moved a step closer to taking strike action in a row over working conditions.

The branch's 160 staff agreed to a ballot following a visit from a Communication and Workers Union (CWU) official last week.

A vote will now take place with a 24-hour walk out potentially taking place by the end of the month.

Bristol CWU branch secretary David Wilshire said workers were unhappy at Royal Mail's modernisations plans.

He said: "The postal workers on the ground see what is happening on a daily basis.

"They are taking on more workloads and getting paid the same amounts while their rights are being eroded away.

"They are unhappy at having no say in their employer's plans."

Strike action at the branch, the largest in North Somerset, would affect BS22, BS23 and BS24 postcode areas.

It would follow a 24-hour walk out by 20 staff at Yatton and 50 staff at Clevedon this Saturday.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "As mail volumes fall we need to make changes and become more efficient right across the UK.

"Industrial action will not modernise Royal Mail - it will simply disrupt the service to which customers are entitled, lead to an even greater loss of business and leave Royal Mail far less able to protect full-time jobs.
