HOUSEHOLDERS fed up with junk mail have a new ally in the form of North East business UK Letterbox Choice.

The not-for-profit business not only registers its members with postal preference services run by the Post Office, Royal Mail and Mail Preference Service but provides them with a locking letterbox which is fitted by a Trading Standards-approved locksmith.

This means hand-delivered junk mail, fliers and menus are stopped, as is postbox vandalism such as fireworks being pushed through and criminals using hooks and poles to fish for keys.

UKLC, of Sacriston in County Durham, runs a national fitting and removal service for all householders who join.

UKLC communications manager Lorraine Graham said: “This operation is certainly unique and a long overdue first for the UK. Its design and operation mean it is the first service in the UK to combine all formats for stopping junk mail and post vandalism and be operated by the householder themselves or the approved exclusive use of the Royal Mail or Post Office so that normal postal delivery will not be affected.” Extension of the service nationwide has started and consultation with the Post Office and charities about receiving funding raised by UKLC subscriptions are going on.

Barclays local business manager in Teesside and Wearside, Andrew Scott, said: “I have been working closely with UKLC over the last few months supporting them with the new business and their plans.

“Barclays are always keen to support new and exciting ventures and I wish UKLC every success with this innovative and already very popular product.”

Its effectiveness is also the main disadvantage of the scheme. For it to work, UKLC needs Royal Mail to co-operate. Although Royal Mail is happy to give postmen a copy of your letterbox key, the company doesn't force postmen to use them. If your postie doesn't feel like unlocking and locking your letter box day in day out, your mail will go back to the sorting office.

Q: What happens if my postie wont use the UKLC key I've offered him to deliver my mail?

A: UKLC is designed to work by householder operation - and with the Post Office at the Postie's discretion. Although the service and lock are approved exclusively for use by Royal Mail/Post Office staff only (allowing you not to have to remember to lock/unlock the letterbox) - they cannot be forced into doing so. Postal staff who decline to use the UKLC locking unit must then deposit your mail at a local Post Office or collection centre for you to retrieve it; your mail can then be collected daily, weekly as required.

The service was designed this way to allow maximum choice on behalf of the householder and to also take into account of those members who may have difficulty or medical conditions which may prevent them for remembering to lock/unlock the service daily.

It is worth remembering that Postal staff who choose to participate in the service are paid by an annual donation taken from UKLC membership fees generated by the public who join the service.

So i assume RM are going to remeasure all walks to take into account the extra time this is going to add to walks.
