Re: Should i stay here ?
pretty much in a similar position, although dont have a job offer on the table. im 20, and started with royal mail in november, liked the job at first, but over the last couple of months since 4 hour walks came in, im finding it pretty s**t. the bonus to come out of the revision though was, that i was given a full time position which is great. I always find myslef asking the question do i want to deliver letters for the rest of my life, especially when the business seems to be getting worse and gettin constant pressure and hassle of my DOM manager.

That is the crux of it at the end of the day Andy.m. Whichever job you take in RM its all sorting mail at the end of the day, not much involved really. Have you thought about management?
I left at 21, best decision I ever made.

He didn't say "apprenticeship" he said training, and that covers a multitude if sins."Doone"]How long have you been a P/T postie,..cant you take a year,s Sabatical,...try your hand at your chosen Apprenticeship,
Training in what? Burger-flipping? Mythical IT job? Selling mobiles? Many firms say they offer "training", but that's just another way of paying employees less, and funnily enough, at the end of this "training" there's no job on offer and they're down the road.
You need to find out (or let on) more of what's on offer.

If this job will give you important skills ie builders, electrician, plumbing or whatever go for it. If this job is a generic sales / IT jobs don't bother.
I think Royal Mail is a good job and offer good security but if you want to change jobs in Royal Mail it is very hard. Shame Royal Mail is not a nice company to work for.

Re: Should i stay here ?
I agree with the "go with your heart" option.
Money/etc isn't everything.
I left a £25,000/year job (with good prospects) at the age of 20 to work on site fitting electric gates. Took about a 50% drop in wages but I was a lot happier and never regretted it.
I've always enjoyed working outside, and I like the afternoons free, hence why I feel I'm enjoying being a postie.
I am looking at trying to move into driving for the royal mail though - whether that'll work out or not who knows.

Re: Should i stay here ?
Sounds like a good decision if you can keep up with the evening course... I've tried that in previous jobs and found it difficult to say the least. Good luck with it and try and stick with it. Keep in mind the long term prospects at all times when the going gets tough because it will. Working at the same time will will tire you, your friends will try and drag you down the pub when you should be studying... but if you can stay focus the world will be at your feet in a few years time

Re: Should i stay here ?
Good luck - I think that's the right decision.
I know of a postie who did that. Went on to university to study law.
He got a top degree, and went on to qualify as a Solicitor, and got
a high paid job with a top London commercial law firm - might have
helped that he was a Hugh Grant lookalike though (really he did and
actually got paid to do that).

I agree and it's worth thinking about what Tman said...Tman wrote: Many firms say they offer "training", but that's just another way of paying employees less, and funnily enough, at the end of this "training" there's no job on offer and they're down the road.
Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one

Re: Should i stay here ?
Ive been Working with RM for about a year now im on one of those stupid 24 hour contracts where im supposed to start at 10am and finish at 2pm. Over the last few months the job has been great! starting at 7am everyday, which has given me some nice overtime in the mornings and extra walks in the afternoon. But Due to the recent cutbacks etc etc I've now lost all my morning overtime. I've also been told that i will never be made to a Full time contract ! (40hours) Do your self a favour get out and get your head down and make a future for your self!Puppetmaster wrote:On one hand their is no longterm future at RM at present and the chances of going full time are proably remote at present.
