The Hellmail view is that RM will dig in and it's "interesting" that troll parroting off the RM intranet hymn sheet said that the strike will go national . Unfortunately it's always been the same with RM as long as I can remember , if you don't stand up to RM ; you'll get pushed around - end of - even Lord Sawyer said bullying was instuitionalized with ALL grades .

Although i made no mention of strikes i will say if you work to rule (do the job properly) then your within the bounds of efficency are you not night tonic ? or do you have a 'managers' spin on that point

Actually, there's a big difference between a work to rule, and doing the job properly: A work to rule, is where you do precisely what's in your Contract of Employment. Nothing more. No Overtime, no extra little jobs, nothing.

Doing the job properly, is where you do the job safely, without cutting corners. A COMPLETELY different situation.

Oil dispute set to come to an end
Next image Date: 28/6/2009 16:14:39

Search: Oil Refinery Dispute

The bitter dispute by contract workers which has led to wildcat strikes at power stations and refineries across the country is set to come to an end after a deal was agreed to resolve the row over jobs.

Hundreds of workers will hold a mass meeting outside the Lindsey oil refinery in North Lincolnshire on Monday morning and will be recommended by union officials to accept the agreement which was thrashed out during marathon talks last week.

The workers have been on unofficial strike for weeks after complaining that 51 employees were being laid off at Lindsey, which is owned by energy giant Total, while other contractors on the site were hiring staff.

Thousands of workers across Britain took sympathy strike action in support of the Lindsey workers at up to 15 sites.

Phil Whitehurst, a senior shop steward from the GMB union drew huge crowds at the Glastonbury festival in Somerset this weekend when he spoke about the dispute.

He linked up with a group campaigning against Total in Burma and handed over a cheque for £500 on behalf of the UK trade union movement.

Mr Whitehurst said he expected the Lindsey workers to accept the deal and march back into work

Unions said they had achieved their objective of finding other jobs for the 51 workers as well as rescinding dismissal notices sent to 647 employees at the site who have been on strike.

The unions have also won a guarantee of no victimisation against workers across the country who took sympathy action.

it's a very fine line between work to rule and doing it properly as i see it if your doing it properly then you should not be lets say helping them out by doing o/t etc.
I doubt anyone even in a work to rule would be 100% by the book anyway just the major things like o/t etc maybe im wrong but it's the way i see it

Why?
As far as I'm concerned, there's a huge gap, between working to rule, and doing the job properly. There has been a culture, throughout RM of cutting H&S corners, to speed things up. For example: Carrying too much weight, running (or jogging), instead of walking, etc., etc.. And doing free overtime, to get the job done.

The call to do the job properly, was IMHO intended to make us all a great deal safer. And to show just how many unpaid hours are done every day. If everyone worked every hour they were paid for, claimed every hour they did as overtime, and did no extra hours over and above that. We wouldn't need to loose anybody from a DO.

How did I come to such a sweeping generalisation?
As far as I'm aware, there are still people at every DO, who come in early. So let's say for the sake of argument, that on average, you have 8 people coming in 1 hour early. That equals a Full Time Duty! Even if that's over optimistic of me, and it's only 4 people doing an average of 1 hour for free. It's still a 20 Hour Contract. :hmmmm

A work to rule on the other hand, is a totally diferent situation. It's where you do precisely what it says in your Contract. Nothing more, nothing less. So no overtime, no helping your Collegues if they need bailing out (that becomes the Managers problem), etc., etc..

Nothing new here then. Still, lets see if we can drag you away from the usual primary school taunts and back on track.

It depends how long you've been in the job, your mindset and whether you can take in more than fed by the CWU but I wouldn't be at all surprised if we don't start seeing swathes of job losses this year. Your own personal opinion of 'efficiency' is irrelevant when the mail isn't moving and thats likely to be a regular feature. Doing the job within the rules of safety I'd agree on totally, but talking yourself out of a job by going slow is plain stupid. Jobs are scarce now.

Depends on your qualifications 'night tonic' i have no problems on that front have you ? The fear factor is royal fail and it's scaremongering tactics when they know they are doing things that are fudamently wrong against the will of the already overworked staff and using bullying as the main tool for reaching there objectives. why do you think so many have had enough when work loads are increasing and unmanageable yet the pratts keep forcing extra on already stressed staff. maybe your bonus is the most important thing to you but please note we do not take strike action as 'lightly' as you seem to think

still not thought of an answer then ??????? nt

Industrial disputes are a reflection of the lack of trust on either side of the divide in each other's vision. The media, and society in general, do not sit comfortably with compromise as that neither creates sales or generates public interest. Finding workable solutions to disputes where both sides come out with honour are rare beasts in themselves, and especially so in the current climate at RM.

Like it or not, RM is still a publicly-owned company and carries that burden heavily on its shoulders. Denied investment by past neglect, pension contribution holidays, unfair competition and the ever present and increasing bureaucratic interference in its operation, is it any wonder that RM is perched precariously at the cliff edge.

All of the above have contributed to the short-term panic measures currently in vogue at RM which are at the heart of the increasing industrial unrest, leaving both manager and worker frustrated.

The Pay and Modernization Agreement 2007-2009 frustrated everyone too. It was an agreement open to much interpretation on virtually every point. Different emphasis would be placed by both RM and CWU on certain words in the propaganda war that continues to this day. 'Efficiency' and 'Modernization' are two words that crop up regularly and have opposing interpretation attached to them depending on your standpoint of RM or CWU.

When you think of the number of jobs that have been slashed/replaced by part-time contracts from the postal service since the Pay & Mod Agmnt; the umpteen different ways of working that have been introduced, revised, removed, revamped and then imposed; the arbitrary Unit budget cuts, etc, etc, etc is it any wonder that the workforce will look skeptically at senior management of Royal Mail Letters when the total sum of profit that can be mustered is pathetic given the turnover of billions for the last financial year.

The workforce has every right to question the competence of senior management in its decision-making given that RM (in its own words) the majority have agreed and conformed to its interpretation of the Pay & Mod Agmnt, its interpretation of ‘efficiency’ and ‘modernization’.

It is my opinion that RM senior management have chosen to bury their heads in the sand rather than meet the challenge ahead. If RM is so confident that its stance is the right one what does it have to fear from having open dialogue with the CWU over the next 3 months?

Thats been tried for years and not gotten anyone anywhere. More to the point, casual labour is becoming commonplace with postal services and like I said, when jobs are scarce and money tight, sticking your neck out isn't an option for a lot of people, especially for those with families. I can see the pension being scrapped if we deliver a worse service and have months of industrial action this year. Dead man walking and all that. Grim but true.

Sorry axeman, no time to play your tit-for-tat games. Life is too short.
