Its called 'Modeernisation'. SO has the machinery to do what PO and BH/DT dont have. SO is leaking business the same as BH/DT and PO. Why not put what is coming in into SO. Simple Royal Mail savings. Cut all work at BH PO and save costs. For Royal Mail costs means jobs. Think of the Modernisation costs that could be saved by Royal Mail. Some people out there have their heads in cloud cuckoo land. Many hiundreds of people are going to loose jobs or made to do 2 jobs instead of 1. Its already happening in BH and PO. So be realistic. Be prepared to be brutalised, bullied and beaten into submission because your Union is now defunct in the work place (see all posts fort Mcs & DOs)

Not sure where the "your" union comes into it,i take we must be talking to either a manager or a non union member .Southampton already has machinery that is old in comparison to what is required for the future and i know that it is maxed on capacity as several of my friends have been up there on nights recently. No mail centre is safe, that is for sure and no mail centre is safer than any other!!

Well said the union is only defunct if you let it be and it is all about saving money cutting back i think they use the words steam line, fit for the future to be able to survive, this is how we have had it said to us.

I work at Oldham MC the last shift which is nights finishes this week before going to Manchester shortly followed by Stockport and Bolton. We had this 5 month review thing which was alot of Bull. We where told very little just updates like oh btw nothing to be said.

After about 3 months we got given a list of so called proposals truth is you only had to read it to know which centres will be saved.

Out of interest which other centres have closed or merged in recent years. I know Oxford and Reading have gone to Swindon, heard Stoke maybe going to Wolves. Seen that MK, Coventry and Northampton being put into one centre. Also heard Bradford & York going to Leeds.

Rumours and lies. Southampton (because of their lousy IMPS) can't make it through a late shift without failing, and that's with the current level of mail. Add in another postcode's work, and they've got no hope of clearing.
In reality, BAA want the SO site for expansion, and as PO and BH are due to get the new version of MTTs, SO are looking the dodgy ones.
PO also do the IoW mails, something which SO couldn't do because of the ferries connection.

No, SO are the ones to be worried..... :hmmmm
sorry mate, things have changed, last few weeks southampton have started taking most,if not ALL of pompeys 1c and 2c business mech, and have 3 css sequence machinces recently added, gotta be PO going be the look of it....

That doesn't mean PO will close though. You're forgetting the planned "new towns" at Whiteley and elsewhere inc. Sussex, who do you think will sort this mail :)

This is starting to get a bit tit for tat so lets look at both po m/c and so m/c.
1) southampton m/c, 11 year old modern mail centre with imps walk sorting machines, dock bays and levellers for artics, double deckers, non manned entry and exit.
there was a point when there was talk about the airport wanting the land back for their use, but with the downturn in travel that has not come to much and southampton m/c has rewnewed their lease for 20 years.

2)portsmouth m/c, this is a old building(1960s maybe) with approx 5 levels, the ground being where the lorries enter and leave the building, despatching is mainly served by 17 ton lorries as you can only get 1 artic in at a time. there are no docks so tail lifts are needed, the inward mail is taken by lifts to one of the upper floors for sorting. this is also a delivery office.

yes there are and will be new housing appearing around the area, but this will mainly affect the delivery of mail.

there was talk once about putting both together but since the downturn in mail that has die of death.

it would be possible for southampton to take in maybe half of portmouths outward mail and maybe the other half going to gatwick, but the despatch times would have to be changed.

Well I know that Portsmouth MC is worth a few million given its prime location. Tens of millions if I remember correct. Sorting via Gatwick doesn't solve the IoW question though? :Very Happy

Was told in last weeks wtl,in which the main union rep took part,we were told that nearly all portsmouth 2c was being transferd to southampton over the next month(all manual/mech letters/flats,and that 26duties were no longer needed at portsmouth,it would seem the writing is on the wall! :cry .Also told by some late shift that a large 1c mech diversion is a regular thing these days too!Be nice if management could just come clean, instead of claiming to know nothing :mad
