Problem was that people were not sure which side he was supposed to be on , towards the end he was less New Labour and to be fair ; dealt with the likes of :lfo very well . He told friends that he didn't want a strike in 2003 . There MAY be a point in that , RM's board were gagging for a strike as the likes of :lfo spent the first two years trying to turn everybody against the CWU , that's what he was paid a lot of money for

As it happened , London saved the day when the Union was on it's knees and Dave Ward to be fair , organized things well .

People were frightened that Keggie would turn into a politician like Johnson , Bumbling Billy was in the right place at the right time , he'd the backing of a big branch ( Liverpool ) - Billy is a good old style tub thumper if nothing else and wasn't Alan Johnson .

As for taking the p*** out of Bumbling Billy's origins , the scousers on here don't rate him much - enough said

It's always gone on - " Knobble this strike for us and we'll look after you " - A lot of New Labour whips are former Union Officials , Politics has changed , regardless of what people think of :mfo ; he's loyal to the New Labour machine and himself !

New Labour actually like ex union officials as Union politics are far more vicious than national politics , look at the goings on over leadership with Unite & the split in Unison .

Johnson looks if he's got out of the Health job at the right time with all the things that have come up , the next health secretary has to deal with the mess and no doubt the Tory after 2010

Brown or more like :mfo ? has been clever enough to give him the poisoned chalice , the Home Secretary job to neutralize him

I agree with the bit about Union politics being vicious--but not ours with Mr Hayes.but no more about him, it's my day off and I want to enjoy it!My Bones are telling me there will soon be big changes on the Union Front.
