the irony is there will be reams of paperwork , pie charts , flow charts , power point presentations on the subject , memos , reports , e- mails etc on RM 's er ! " Victorian values " but we can all rest assured that it's keeping somebody in work in a nice air conditioned office whilst the " lazy soldiers " are being hounded through the door , their hours cut and made redundant .

stupid postmen eh ! :chuckle :chuckle - don't know what you're laughing at Belial , you'd have probably come to a sad demise as a match girl or chimney sweep & ATOS acting for the GPO would put you in you in the parish workhouse for a accident with negligence on duty .

There would be asylums for the GPO senior managers though :Very Happy - the staff would be able to visit and watch from a observation balcony - irrational hatred of management & a divide eh ? - welfare visits :hmmmm - just like RM's " welfare visits & calls " :Very Happy

my arse the mail is going down 10% a year .... you only have to see the volumes we get on tuesdays, wedensdays and saturdays compared to what we used to get on these days .... saturdays are now the busiest day of the week ... nothing but royal mail propoganda :cfo

i notice that someone mentioned RMs contact strstegy for "sick" staff.

For the record i disagree with the party line on this, i think its an invasion of privacy.

However i do wonder if Rm employs staff with fundamentally weak immune systems!? t
here are a lot of staff out there playing the "game" on the attendance procedure, and if you're looking for someone to blame for RMs contact strategy, ATOS and all that, then look no further than the "invilid" sitting next to you tomorrow.

plenty of managers "playing the game" or being professional skivvers as RM is all they've known from being cadets but it's all swept under the carpet :hmmmm - double standards :hmmmm

Funny how reps etc are singled out on RMAP or CofC , nothing to do with union bashing of course :Very Happy - I agree there are some old soldiers

that also sounds like RM's " vision " of divisive & destructive teamwork , very much the party line :hmmmm - more like team Rampton or Broadmoor :hmmmm

RM also has the highest rate of musco - skeletal injuries in the country + has been monitored by the HSE since 2004 for it's high accident record - but it's all the fault of the malingerer swinging the lead sat or stood next to you :chuckle

you guys are entitled to your opinions on taylorism, and i respect that. It's unrealsitic to think that an individual can work at 100% for 8 hours in that type of environment, however, i would expect at least 60-75% effort over the course of a day.

What you seem to forget is that these are the values worked to in other similar industries, if the individual isn't performing it isn't too long before they are found out and shown the door. Like it or not you work in a production line-style job.

RM procedure is so long and complex that half the managers cant be bothered to exercise their full right.........something you have the CWU to be thankful for

for the chap who asked what the standard was for sorting letters, flats and packets into a standard frame, the combined value is 25. I think this is actually pretty low considering walk sequenced traffic is on the increase.

its really interesting that no one has replied to my comments on strikes during a recession.........it will inevitably go national in the next 8 weeks.

What do you think public opinion will be towards the CWU and royal mail staff?

I suppose that someone from the "outside" looking in would probably have a "Mad World" point of view in how things are run in this "multi-billion pound" industry.
However the CWU have stated that Royal Mail are making "arbitury cuts" and to add to that here is where the hate is between staff and management and why,(for example),
- No member of management has been threatened physically by a member of staff,(Managers assaulted a member of staff in Canteen, Oxford 2003)
- No member of Management has had their families threatened,(happened in Oxford 20003 in which staff were followed picking up their children from school and "wheel spinning" outside their houses)
Those managers were found guilty...dismissed?....no promoted!!
That information has now spread up and down the country. 2003 you say? Long time ago you say?
Well before dismissals are conducted(in 2009),or a decision to dismiss, the appeals manager has already been decided. Fact.
The work itself is good in terms of terms and conditions, but we do need a union.Fact.
Most posties will tell you that the delivery part is great. It is just the line managers that are horrible.Fact.
Why are they not allowed in Resource meetings? Because they are scared.Fact.
Scared to tell the cluster that the cuts are not working. Scared to tell the cluster that they cannot work with the "explain every hour spent" spreadsheet.Fact.
Royal Mail's savings proposals/impositions are a phantom, based on people using their cars and coming in early.Fact.
I wish it was'nt this way I really do but it is.There is no excuse really..but you cannot just have one point of view.Come in, in high level meetings with management/CWU before you give a one sided affair. It is a real "eye opener"

Its also interesting to note that I have had no reply to my post about Phase 4 :nervous. You did ask which part RM had abandoned.

Also in my area have never seen walk sequenced traffic yet. There is more mech though than a few years ago.

25 for packets, flats and letters not heard that - the one standard I have seen is the 1 minute test of letters into a virgin frame http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... php?id=143" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Possibly you are right.Maybe there is no answer. However do you think that those hours will come back after the recession?
If history tells us anything it is recessions and growth.

Don't prepare your self for the next 12 months.prepare for the next 12 years.

Lastly ask your long term immediate staff how many managers have come and gone in their time. The results are staggering!

it was in a glossy management magazine containing a lot of pictures :chuckle with a editorial from " Tom " ( very corporate :hmmmm ) ( former Op's Director ? with a alleged reputation for orchestrating strikes and trying to starve people back to work in Scotland ) that it was just a fight in a canteen and a old fashioned show of hands in the car park .

It was " strange " that " Success Factor " , the independent firm sent to investigate were scathingly critical of RM's " management " , the CWU " Voice " article was " interesting " :hmmmm

As for not answering why strike during a recession ? , again RM appears to be atypically backward looking , The Teamsters union in the states :hmmmm was formed in the 1930's to deal with awful working conditions , the " masters " answer was we've got people waiting outside . It also sounds like we'll turn the clock back 80 - 100 + years and make you all damm grateful :hmmmm

Too many senior managers stuck in a 80's time warp :hmmmm

I'm sorry but that's two wrongs making a right , also you have to consider why there is such a global downturn , Bankers are not very popular these days ! - quell surprise ( not ) an economy based on nothing or just debt , it's amazing how they got away with it for so long

As for factories and industry , if they were run like RM , they'd be bankrupt with senior managers in prison for Enron style accounting . Look at Glasgow , bit of the collapse of Rome eh ?

Just to add,if we are talking about "a business". Royal Mail in the past have started long term projects and threw millions on it.
(TDS/LAP/Last Letter Time/Consignia/Abolishing Rush Culture/Health & Safety/Job & Finish/ etc).
Now approach your next level of manager and ask him what the "end result" of those projects were? What did Royal Mail,as a business achieve in the end?

What do you think public opinion will be towards the CWU and royal mail staff?
Sell Off Royal Mail at Your Peril, Public Tell Government
20th May 2009

Three quarters oppose mail sale, saying it breaks promises and would be bad for taxpayer.

In an ICM poll published today (Wednesday) 75% of people now oppose the part-privatisation of Royal Mail, with 60% of people saying it needs to be reformed but must remain in the public sector.

Last week the Royal Mail announced a £321 million profit, the first time all four arms of the business turned in a profit in twenty years. 78% say a sale would be a bad deal for the taxpayer and 82% think prices will go up, according to an ICM poll published on the day of the third reading of the Postal Services Bill in the Lords.

In the strongest condemnation of the part-privatisation of the Royal Mail to date, 80% of the public believes the proposed sale breaks a key election promise.

As the Bill moves to the House of Commons after the Whitsun recess, 27% - more than one in four - of those polled say they are less likely to vote for their current MP - from any Party - if she or he backs the proposal to sell a 30% stake in the business. This figure rises to 36% for those who identify most with the Labour Party.

Billy Hayes, General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union, which represents 180,000 postal workers, said today: "Royal Mail needs to be modernised not privatised.

"The public have got it right, the business needs to be reformed within the public sector giving it the freedom to invest but keeping it as a public service; it makes organisational, financial and now clearly political sense.

"The CWU will work with the Government, the management and the public to ensure that Royal Mail is modernised as a public organisation to serve the nation's interest."
"why should it just be the bankers, politicians and the idle rich who get all the best things ? we demand a standard of living for our members that enables them to share in the fine wines and times that the likes of Cameron and his Eton buddies take for granted " - the late great Bob Crow RIP.

"for the chap who asked what the standard was for sorting letters, flats and packets into a standard frame, the combined value is 25. I think this is actually pretty low considering walk sequenced traffic is on the increase."

I haven't noticed an increase in walksorted mail, but rather an increase in unsorted mail, as well as at least 2 or 3 missorts in every mech bundle.

"its really interesting that no one has replied to my comments on strikes during a recession.........it will inevitably go national in the next 8 weeks.."

When every other form of IA is deemed to be a breech of contract or illegal, strikes are the last and only resort, we either strike or lose our jobs, go down shouting or quietly, we're still unemployed. It's not just postal workers though, is it?

"What do you think public opinion will be towards the CWU and royal mail staff?"

There will be the usual, sack the lot of them, replace them with Polish immigrants! There will also be overwhelming, though silent, support from the majority of the people on my round, the same I expect around the country.
