RM bossess accused of mail tampering to rig QS figures

Royal Mail bosses in Glasgow have launched an investigation following allegations of mail tampering.

A complaint has been made to mail regulator Postcomm, alerting it to possible interference with post.

It is claimed that the tampering was part of an attempt by Royal Mail staff to distort performance targets.

The allegations centre on a "mystery shopper" scheme run by an independent company, Research International UK, to monitor mail posted to certain addresses.

It is claimed that Royal Mail staff found out about the secret scheme, and tampered with mail to learn the addresses of those involved so they could provide an improved service and artificially boost performance ratings for those addresses.

Royal Mail refused to comment on the allegations, but said in a statement: "Royal Mail is investigating allegations concerning its mail operations in the Glasgow area.

"The allegations, received via Postcomm, relate to the possibility of interference in the measurement of Royal Mail's quality of service performance in this area.

"Royal Mail commenced an immediate independent investigation in relation to the Glasgow area upon receipt of these allegations.

"As part of this investigation, Royal Mail is conducting interviews at local level to assess whether any of the allegations are accurate. Royal Mail is liaising closely with Postcomm to resolve this matter as soon as possible."

It is understood the complaints involve two postcode areas, but Royal Mail was unable to confirm this.

Interfering with mail is a criminal offence that can lead to a fine or up to two years in prison.

Strathclyde Police said the matter was being investigated by Royal Mail and the police would only become involved if that investigation suggested criminal activity.

A spokesperson for Consumer Focus Scotland, which represents users of the postal service, said: "Such claims, if found to be true, would be extremely worrying and would damage the generally high level of trust that consumers have in the postal service."

Looks like the poo is hitting the fan, makes a change for management to be getting the blame, although if you read the comments on the Edinburgh M/C some members of the public just don't understand that posties have to do as they are told and they don't make the decisions.

that's it ! - who encourages this culture ( answers on a postcard please ) - to be fair , there's a lot of it about with New Labour's well intentioned but fatally flawed & ill - considered target culture .

The Police is a classic case in point , somebody has a row with a neighbour and pushes somebody into a hedge , a crime solved , a crime detected etc , etc , somebody gets pulled in and confesses to a bunch of trivial petty offences to make the books look good .

Go to a A&E dept of a hospital , the drunks and druggies have to be seen to , whilst decent people have to wait to be attended to but it ticks the New Labour boxes . Too crude a tool & misused .

What do you expect to happen if the man you appoint at the top of the firm has a history of fiddling his sales figures no doubt in order to boost his income. With an employment record carrying a stain of dishonesty that large I doubt he would have passed the interview for a delivery job. Funny old world init
