There was a Drivers meeting recently, about some local issues, which was well attended. But despite a lot of us asking for a meeting for Indoor staff. When it came down to it: Most of the people who were asking for the meeting, said that they wouldn't actually be going themselves!![]()

So it was never arranged.
At the last one we had, there were only 17 people there out of over 300 Staff. And to think: Just a few years ago, we were such a formidable Office. I dispair of them, I really do!![]()

That sounds so similar to our office, last meeting we called we had 12 or 13 turn up, and 6 of those were the committee, we also used to be a strong office, but nearly 50% went over the line in 2007, we have lots of moaners, but no one willing to give up 30-60 mins and try and get things sorted.
Its so depressing, not sure why the committee keeps going, but you have to look after people if can, if only they were more willing to help themselves...

Do all these offices have the same wording, other of course than location, for their strike ballots, and if so can it be copied on here ?dingo wrote:In line with the conference motions we should have more ballots in place by July 2nd with action plans for gate meetings in all other places.
So far the only offices either striking or who have request ballots are :

Re: Lets be having you !!
Some of the orginal ballots have different wording. But London and all other ballots now have the same wording.
The words are roughly :: Are you prepared to take stirke action against Royal Mail breaking National agreements and in pursuance of a New National Agreement on Modnesation .
This is the wording which all offices will be balloted on in line with the emergency motions carried by all but one branch in the union. Even the Branch who opposed supported strike action but disagreed on the tactics.

Re: Lets be having you !!
You reiterate how I feel in the area I work - there isn't any movement for action at all, no meetings, no information not a sign of any notices - in fact the last notice on our union board is dated March 2008, we have so many part timers and non-union members there isn't any chance of a successful ballot even if there was a ballot. At the last strike in 2007 we had a job to man a picket from 5 in the morning til 9 in the morning - sometimes there was only two of us - within the strike period people were drifting back in because there was no information, no sign of a union official, no one sending gee up e mails. Personally I blame the reps, there are no meetings to explain the situation locally and because of the feeling about the national union the members ignore any missives from London as p*ss and wind. The only communication we get from our reps is "vote for me for this, vote for me for that" bit like the politicos who turn up on your doorstep at election time and then disappear into the woodwork until the next vote is required. There hasn't been a vote for office rep in years, the same two run or more pointedly don't run the show.andy2007 wrote:I'm ashamed to admit it, but where I am, there is so much apathy, that nothing seems to be happening. In the past our office has been militant and would stand up to injustice but that's no longer the case and this isn't a small office, there are about 160 posties here.

I understand the apathy argument, the non members argument and the poor reps argument fully but in these areas resistance now has to be membership driven.dvbuk55 wrote:You reiterate how I feel in the area I work - there isn't any movement for action at all, no meetings, no information not a sign of any notices - in fact the last notice on our union board is dated March 2008, we have so many part timers and non-union members there isn't any chance of a successful ballot even if there was a ballot. If your Branch has not displayed the Emergency motions from Conference, called meetings in every unit and started the balloting process then members need to be asking why that is not the case. Firstly ask your unit rep, then your Branch officials and if needs be write to dave ward asking why you are being left out.
The non members one is something i've never worried about. FIrstly they cant vote in any ballot and secondly a strike ballot is the best recruitment tool ever as they all panic and join up.
Apathy isnt restricted to posties, its a nationwide problem in all industries. Howevers striking workers are now showing us the way. Close to home London returned a 91% yes vote and a solid bout of strike action with more likely to follow. A postie from London is no different to one from Scotland or Newcastle or anywhere else. The difference is the areas balloting are having the situation explained to them by their reps / branches.
Members in these areas have decided they want a fighting union. They want a Union that has a negotiating role in their workplace.
We have no time to waste so grass root members now need to demand meetings in their units. If nobody turns up to an off site meeting, organise gate meetings before work or during meal reliefs. The sight of the whole office on the gate sends a clear message to RM and galvanises peoples sprirts no end
On July 2nd The offer of a Monortorium from the union ends. Up to now too many people have thought this wasnt their fight. From the 2nd the call will go out and balloting will have to increase. The alternative is a derecognition of your union via the backdoor. I know some of the recent changes / agreements have left bitter taste in members mouths but just imagine the workplace without the CWU.
You all have a simple choice. What type of Union do you want? We have to stand and fight now or in 12 months time when you are calling you local/area rep for help there will be no answer and Royal Mail will have put in place CMA style yes men/women to do the dirty work on a regional basis.
Apathy can be blamed for many things but sometimes I think its a convienient excuse for those who aren't prepared to fight for the future of this industry and our jobs.

we had a meeting like that, then later organised one for outside the gates before the start of work, with a much better turn out. You could always try that.

Re: Lets be having you !!
You think things are bad the now. If we don't support OUR UNION and our fellow posties in this fight by standing shoulder to shoulder then Rm win. Our working lives will become a lot harder than it is the now. I'm telling you this if the union goes then I'm going with them, because working for Rm will be unbearable for me and a hell of alot of others.

Re: Lets be having you !!
Yes part of the overall strategy is to achieve a long term delivery solution which will include a deal on Geo route including walking speeds , call rates and attendance rates. The other issue is that Royal Mail are getting around long delivery spans by making sure that no replishment is now included within the 3.5 delivery span so once you add replishment time on top of the 3.5 hours the actual delivery span is well above 4 hours.
Royal Mail have become masters of conning the workforce and we need as a union to expose them more.

Thanks, I'll try asking for that.
Thanks Dingo and Belle Smith. I'll ask my Rep to arrange a meeting before or after Work (whichever he thinks is best). We certainly need to do something.

Re: Lets be having you !!
Our wording so far is non existent . Looks like my area officials are a bunch of wasters.
Given this fact and since I'd quite like to be a member of a union that manages to defend and improve my terms and conditions, can any posters suggest a means whereby I can achieve the latter but ditch the wasters? Please don't suggest the tried and tested democratic process, cos I've tried and tested it and here I am
