A family has been warned their mail could be halted after postmen refused to deliver to their house - because of a vicious kitten.

Royal Mail chiefs wrote to Ken Ridge claiming that his kitten Illy had attacked a postal worker.

Mail deliveries to the house could now be suspended as a result of the attack on the woman, he was told.

Mr Ridge, 65, who lives in Clapham, South London, with his 30-year-old son Bradley, said: 'We were not around when this happened, but it seems some mail was put through the letterbox and their hand was scratched.

'Illy is only a kitten and I am sure she was just playing.

'Then we got a letter from the mail delivery office warning our deliveries could be stopped.'

Signed by office manager Mayo Sonubi, the letter said: 'I am writing to let you know that, on June 6, our postman was attacked by your animal in your premises while delivering mail to your address.

'Animal attacks are a major cause of injury to Royal Mail staff and so I am writing to seek your cooperation in preventing a repeat of this unfortunate incident.

'I must advise you that, if any further incidents of this nature are allowed to take place, I shall have no alternative other than to consider suspending the delivery of mail to your home.'

Shopkeeper Mr Ridge, who runs a fruit and veg business, said friends and neighbours thought the incident laughable and he planned to ignore the warning letter.

'Everyone finds it so amusing that our playful kitten has been mistaken for some savage beast,' he said.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said it always takes animal attacks seriously.

He said: 'We record about 5,000 animal attacks on our postmen and women each year with the vast majority being dogs.

'The member of staff suffered a very bad cut to her hand which required treatment while delivering mail through the letterbox of the address.'

Got a cat like that on my walk. Full grown cat though, not a kitten. It sits on the windowsill waiting for me. It cant reach the letterbox from there, so it jumps down to the floor and then jumps up clawing at the mail. By then I've had time to post it and I never put my fingers into a letterbox anyway.
I know it's after me, not the mail because it then ignores any mail sticking out the letterbox and goes back to it's windowsill and glares at me.

Yeah and the other day a woman on my walk came out of her house looking down her coat. She said, " I've got my kitten in here" and she opened the coat and there was this tiny little scrap of a kitten nestling in her bra. I said, "he looks nice and warm in there" manfully resisting the urge to each out and stroke it. the kitten I mean.

I can remember many years ago an old boy was having problems with a dog on his walk waiting behind the door just ready to snap at his fingers, Royal Mail and the customer never did anything, until one day he had a poster in a tube to deliver, it must have taken perfect timing but just as the dog jumped at the letterbox the tube was shoved through cue a lot of yelping and the dog never came to the door again.

the one I liked on here was somebody booting " Fido " in the Charlie Hollocks ; the owner came out to remonstrate so he got even - he left " Fido " a laxative chocolate . Nature took it's course , he had to get a signature for a packet , the dog looked very sheepish , it's master looked sorry for himself and his missus looked very fed up with her mop , bucket & disinfectant .

Bet " Fido " was sick of being belted over the head with a rolled up newspaper and his nose rubbed into the floor

scratches can cut and draw blood and turn into sore red lumps - on very rare occasions they need seeing too , something to do with spit off the animal ?

A feral cat can have the feathers off a pigeon very quickly , that's why they sharpen their claws , a very efficient little killing machine . I feed one that comes , I get "presents" of rats and mice due to all the mucky , lazy bitches in the locality .

This fighting local one bit off more than it could chew , bit like the owners - there's nothing wrong with it's left eye , just forgot to switch the fill - in flash off

If a cat scratches or bites you it is painful as Norbert said, they draw blood and then you get the red lumps which are also very sore, but another worry with cats is the rare disease Toxoplasmosis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxoplasmosis" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which can affect humans and can be life threatening. I'm a cat owner and would'nt want my cats digging there claws in to me and those idiots on the comments page of that article have'nt got a clue what they are on about, cats are little killing machines.

Clapham Junction is not in the Clapham(sw4)postcode its in Battersea(sw11)which does come as a bit of a suprise to a lot of people.

I think ? there was a story of a small child dying in one of those women's supermarket magazines ( " Take a Break " , " Bella " etc ) ( I was asked to get a pile of them from the car boot & noticed it on one of the covers ) , one of those one in a thousand chance or more things , it was all traced back at the hospital to next door's cat apparently .
