Probe launched into mail found on path

ROYAL Mail has suspended a member of staff after a pile of undelivered post was discovered on a wet walkway.

Discarded letters and bills were found near Dunipace by a passer-by, and local residents claim that some of the mail had been opened.

The Falkirk Herald understands just over 30 items of mail were found on Sunday, and, although most were water-damaged, it should be possible to deliver them.

However, one resident, who claims two of the letters belonged to her, said she was outraged.

She said: "I was stunned and shocked when I found out this had happened. The mail was found by a woman who noticed an electricity bill for a house in Castle Terrace.

"She had originally thought it was just a pile of rubbish.

"She told a man who lives on the street who went to pick up as much of it as he could but it was all mucky because of the rain.

"He brought me two letters addressed to me, but we decided to call the police. They came on Sunday night and took it away and we have not heard anything since. You read about this happening to people in other areas but not in a wee place like Denny."

The mail was found at a footbridge leading into Dunipace.

Royal Mail has launched a probe into the incident.

A spokesman said: "We can confirm a small quantity of mail was handed in to the police at Denny. Royal Mail takes the issue of discarded mail very seriously and we are conducting a detailed internal investigation into the incident in Denny.

"A member of staff has been suspended while our investigations are carried out."

A Central Scotland Police spokesman said officers collected two plastic carrier bags of what appeared to be undelivered mail.

He added: "The Post Office now has the mail and is conducting its own enquiries."

I agree, afterall why would you dump a handful of letters, of course the alternative is that it was stolen out of a pouch and then dumped.

Its called "failure to secure mail" pretty serious offence, not quite stealing probably be looking at 2 year warning if lucky if thats all there is to it.
