summer absorbing

Post by stupidboy »

in our office we have been told that the 2 duties we absorb during the 'summer drop in mail volumes' will be added to our duty. its now part of our duty and MUST be done. when challenged our acting manager stated that we have winter and summer duties, the summer duties having the extra calls added on.
surely the content of your actual duty cannot be changed without union agreement

I noticed this morning an empty fram at the top of my row, literally at the top facing away from the row, not sure if it was a lapsed fram or a new one due to begin? Im new to lapsing and gaining frames but makes me wonder

If time permits then it is expected that we will agree to summer staffing as per Flexibilty aggrement, but if time dosent permit to absorb work in the summer then it should be opposed.

We are absorbing 1 delivery duty at my D.O for the summer mainly due to full compliment of peole on leave and four people off sick medium to long term.

Therefore its a saving on overtime payments for Royal mail rather than a saving on their core work hours budget.

If you are against doing this on principle then your best way out is to make sure you dont rush around and it could be that you only just complete your delivery in time therefore having no time for doing parts of other duties.
Facts are you will be finishing on time sooner or later, the more you "cut up" your duty the more work RM will find for you to do.

Not to try to sound wise after the event as it might be too late for you, but I slowed right down over a year ago now, I get back to the office pretty much on time everyday and the managers know I cant do any extra as I wouldn't have time to do it.
Id advise anyone who has yet to have summer absorption brought into their office to think hard about how much they rush around to complete early and are seen by managers and the circumstances of this.

I have to say that in our office the dom is quite an alright bloke. Hes put forward that to make our savings for 10 - 12 weeks we take out our night duties leaving the one remaining full time night worker plus one other for h&s. This means that rather than covering other walks eg prepping or delivering we should end up doing possibly an extra 15 mins sorting per day (wed, thur, fri) and then just complete our normal duty. The idea seems to have gone down well at our place especially after last years shambles (different dom).

In our office it's not a question of if you have time or not,it's more like we are taking these walks out, this is on top of your .own walk(due to the drop in mail volumes). When staff have said no have not got time they have come back with a full back plan,if you feel that you do not have enough time in your duty to compleat then you must take out all mail for your walk and the extra and you must bring back the mail from your own delivery if you can not compleat, this is what will be done and there is no option.our office managment has now re-written a National Agreement all on its own we have also been told that they are coming back for more hours in a few weeks as at the moment we are going through a revision and even though it's all being forced in( like all other offices )with such poor planning you would be embarrassed to call it planning so we wait to see what happens.

We have one full time night worker, and then the day duties put their names down to do 5 hours SA a night as extras. 1,2,3 extras depending on the day. The amount of people they put on a night is dropping and it wont be long until they dissapear.

We have the usual brain-deads who come in over 1 hr before thier duty begins to prep up. They use thier car, run round the round to come back early and still they wonder why they are given more to do :arrrghhh

Added to which when managers want to add a "little bit" extra its always these dummies they ask, even if they are floaters and usually because they run its "sure no problem can do that easy". When regular postie questions it they effectivly have one of our own backing them up. So for doing the job right they try to penalise you.

Its Time the union stamped this out.

Do you mean drivers do this? Not walkers surely? They have to walk around pouch boxes picking up bags that have been dropped off, in order to take them back to the office? When do they get time to actually deliver anything? Crazy.

Can I ask if anyone is being told to go over their 3.5 hour delivery span as per national agreement? If so why are we doing it?
3.5hours should mean any combination of your own walk plus any absorption. I appreciate RM managers take a different view but this is the foundation of my current disagreement.
I'll see how it goes but I'm not too worried as I'm more or less to time as it is now so can't see me doing any outdoor absorption(famous last words...)

There is no wording that says if time permits within your 3.5 delivery span so it can be argued that its duty time and not delivery span time. Like it or not the national aggrement is what it is.

As 3.5 hours is H & S then a break should be taken after the 3.5 before doing any more delivery.
