Back to earth with a bump. I have not found that it mostly part-timers. In my office i would say its a 50/50 split with part and full timers using cars, who prob make up about 40% in total. Some of the worst are long term posties with one guy actually buying a van to use as he could not no longer fit all the mail in his car, how mad is that :arrrghhh

The only person who is going to suffer is the person who uses the car.I can't see why it bothers others so much.
If the dom tries to put more on a car user,they can just stop using it.
If a dom tries to say you can't have ot as some car user did it in this time,just point out they used a car.
I honestly can't see the fuss.

Then brother pony, you must either have clouded eyes or are wearing blinkers, because on the specific issue of private cars on delivery Royal Mail will not do anything about this while our members in the face of CWU policy continue to use their own cars. Saving the business both time and money and in an increasing number of cases our members are driving around uninsured which can have serious and far reaching consequences. There is only really one answer - DON'T DO IT.

Firstly, no one is saying that you should not use your car to get to work. The main issue and which to remind you is CWU policy, is to end the use of private cars on delivery. Secondly, if you have to travel back to the office after your delivery then this should be included in your duty as would travel time out to our delivery. Royal Mail must accept it's responsibility to ensure that workers take their breaks, use the right equipment in the right way for the job and cease the use of private cars on delivery. There must also be a commitment to fair and manageable workloads and to ensuring all working environments are as safe and secure as possible.

Im actually pretty lucky, the office i work at is run pretty well, and a lot of health and safety stuff is pointed out if the managers see you doing something wrong like over weight pouches. In fact cars are banned strongly, the union and management would take action if they knew someone was using a car.
Using vans actually keeps people in work, when people are using cars theres less work for van drivers to do - less drop bags / people to take out to delivery points. Now that everyone has to use vans at my office there has actually been duties created - there are more duties post pegasus than before it because everyone stuck to doing the job properly.

IPS wrote:I do not agree with people taking cars out on delivery and I never have but the advantages are too great.

Royal Mail can dump you 3+ miles away from the DO with bags and multiple packets. The bag drop can force you to backtrack multiple times and if people are not in you can find yourself stuck with lots of P739'd packets which you have to struggle with during the delivery and on the way back to the office using a bike.

Now all of this is eradicated with the use of your car, I believe most people understand the pitfalls but weigh them up and decide it's easier to use their cars. Most of them fold with line manager bullying and some do it for personal reasons. Whilst I do not agree with the use, my anger is directed more towards Royal Mail for not picking up Posties who are a certain way from the office. However all they do is take you to the bagdrop then forget about you which is a Royal Mail mantra.

Coming in early really is a bugbear of mine though. Working for free and running around is just destroying the job and putting pressure on the people who try and do things the right way. I have often been accused of dragging my feet as a reserve because the regular 'who comes in early/runs around/uses car' can complete faster than me.

I once told the manager WHY they were faster and the response was that they didn't care about the 'why's' just the fact they DIDN'T CLAIM OVERTIME!

So, how can I work with responses like that?

On the other side of the coin though, imagine postie "X" is getting harassed about cut offs, time taken to complete. Postie X cannot cope with the pressure any more and takes their car out on delivery. Now they can complete and the manager moves onto someone else, Postie X now gets an easy life, something we all deserve.

If we all stuck together we could overcome most of the problems described but sadly Royal Mail, over the years, have done their level best to separate us all.
I feel this post covers it all,
drop you off 3+ miles.
Q. why drop you off ? why not meet you there ? the business could save money by not paying you to travel out and sort, just pay you to deliver. The business already saves by not providing tools for the job (i.e. bag drops and vehicles etc.) by getting people to use their own, so this could be an extra saving.

Q.Why stop people coming in early ? it must save thousands or tens of thousands of hours.
Perhaps a study to show how many hours are saved could be conducted.

If previos postings are taken as true then approx 50% of all delivery staff commit these acts.Assuming they save on average an hour each then this equates to about 50,000 people saving 50,000 hours @ £10 an hour = £500,000 a day or £3M a week or £150M per annum.
Maybe more maybe less, anyway if i were to hazard a guess i would say it's lottery numbers

not trying to fan any flames but for those of you who are using your cars on delivery, please be aware you are entitled to tax relief

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/relief-mileage.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/travel.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

this will help you to pay the extra to cover proper business insurance on your vehicle

Just had a thought while this debate hottens .

I seem to be getting the brunt of all the anger which is fair enough as I am the only one that has stood up and admitted what I do . I can handle it . :crazy:

Anyway the more i read the more i feel the need to explain a little further . Im not backtracking by any means . The more i read about people using their cars etc the more i understand . The thing is .......... yes i do come in early when i can . nothing new there . Yes i do use my car . BUT , and this is where i may have not explained myself properly at the beginning .......... I only use the car to get to my starting point ............ I never use it to hold my pouches and use it throughout my delivery . Once i leave my car then thats the last i use it until i finish my delivery 2 hours later ............... ( yeah ok not 2 hours ...... just a joke :left: )

just thought i would clear that up .

Fair enough :Very Happy But what about all your other pouches ? do you have drop boxes to put them in around the delivery ? do you drop them yourself or put them out for a driver ?

Calpsy I don't know if you have previously read this particular thread as it originated in 2008 but would humbly suggest that if you haven't read it then do so in full.
