What is the official stance on this hot summer?

Today I was out between 11-3 in the baking sun and have been burnt on my arms quite badly. Do Royal mail have a duty of care for their workers or not? Do we have to fork out for the protection because RM demand we go out later during the dangerous part of the day?

I know for fact if I was caught seeking shade and claimed overtime they would shaft me!

Just wondered what others thought and if a H+S rep could comment?

i know what you mean the general rule is we supply you with long sleeved shirts and a sun hat, the union should have thought about this before agreeing to later starts, but what do we have duties taken out in the summer so we are in the sun longer, what we should be doing is ok you want summer lapsing then let us revert to the 05.00 starts and give us the chance to finish before the sun is at its peak.

I never got supplied with long sleeved shirts and even now we seem to be getting issued with red polo shirts which are all short sleeved but I do have a sun hat (I believe I'm the only one in my office to wear it) as for the lapsing, they can f*** away off, I'll not be doing it because I can make my duties last their entire time just by following RMs own H&S rules

If you really want some long sleeved shirts, just specify that you want the long sleeved ones, when you order them.

But the problem with that, is the heat. If you wear long trousers, long sleeved shirt. You will get a lot hotter, than if you wear shorts, and a polo shirt. At one time not so long ago you could not get long sleeved shirts about two years ago i think even a shirt will not stop the sun's harmful rays at this time of year even in this country!. The best thing is to stay out of the sun but royalmail seams intent on putting us in it against all the advice in years to come maybe we could take out a class action against royalmail if it still exists!.

The shirts work pretty well in keeping the sun out but I remember last year the sun just burnt through the trousers which is why I'm wearing my own (much thicker) ones this year, along with factor 50 sun cream , a sun hat and sun glasses I may look a burke but I'm keeping myself as safe as possible.

You may not see the damage the UV can do it can take a life time too develop it is good that you do everything in your power to prevent the damage that royalmail inflicts up us all without us realiseing!.

I asked about the use of materials that wicker away sweat etc... And ventilation and light weight. There response was it was not cost effective for the uk climate given we have short summer. In brief cost comes before our welfare as usual with rm. I bet they babe lovely air conditioned offices.

Not cost effective and a twenty grand table is :cfo and a £500 chair in his new comfy office!.
