X-ray device left in dog mess bin

Staff at a Somerset veterinary practice who spent weeks waiting for a piece of X-ray equipment were shocked to find it had been posted into a bin for dog faeces.

Kingfisher Veterinary Centre in Chard ordered the electronic timer lead, worth £250, for its X-ray machine on April 8. Staff expected a slight delay due to the Easter holidays, but when the parcel had still not arrived by Saturday, they grew increasingly concerned.

Surgery partner Robin Carpenter phoned suppliers, Xograph the following Tuesday and was assured it had been posted.

Then at the end of April, as staff were cleaning out the dog bin, which hangs on a wall of the vets’ premises, they discovered the parcel buried underneath bags of faeces.

Mr Carpenter, who is also a partner of the veterinary centre in Crewkerne, said: “We just can’t understand how this mistake was made, the poo bin is clearly marked.


“It’s obviously quite a cock-up and set us back financially, having to change and cancel appointments.

“It was a considerable nuisance in a number of ways and we are seeking compensation from Royal Mail, but they have told us they won’t do this.”

In a letter to Mr Carpenter, a Royal Mail spokesman said because the practice had not opted for Consequential Loss cover, the service was not able to meet compensation claims.

Consequential Loss cover entitles recipients to extra compensation should something go wrong with a delivery.

Royal Mail did, however, apologise to Mr Carpenter and resolved to improve the quality of the service he received in the future.

Bit of a pillock postie that guy, but they didn't say the apparatus was unusable, just covered in tish, nothing soap and water won't fix - as I can testify to - I mean who hasn't had an accident now and again and again and again.
