Cops hunt gun nut who shot postie twice

A CRAZED gunman who shot a postman twice in the head as he delivered his morning mail was last night in hiding.

Detectives know who they are after and swooped on a number of houses near the scene of the daylight shooting.

But the man they were looking to arrest was not at any of the addresses and is now believed to be on the run.

One officer said: “All I can say at the moment is we are looking for a man in connection with an alleged firearms incident. Our inquiries are continuing.”

The swoops on homes were close to where 53-year-old postie Alex Anderson was shot in Crossmill Avenue, Barrhead, on Saturday morning by a man lying in wait and armed with a powerful air weapon.

The horrified dad was first wounded on the lip and the force of the pellet shattered a front tooth. As more shots rang out Mr Anderson dived for cover.

Then he was hit on the top of his head by a second pellet. By now the wounds on his head were bleeding badly and he was later rushed to Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital where the pellets were surgically removed.

After treatment he was able to leave and is now recovering at home.

Following the frightening attack Royal Mail suspended deliveries to more than 30 houses in the area of the shooting until police track down the armed man.
Police described the attack as cowardly. One officer said: “This highlights the dangers posed by the use of air weapons.”
