Hunt for rescue hero

Police are eager to track down an unsung hero who plucked a woman to safety after her car was perilously hanging over a dangerous drop.

The motorist had tried to turn round on White Tor Road, at Starkholmes, Matlock, about 12.50pm, on Monday, when part of the vehicle slipped off the edge of the road.

A police spokesman said: "A passing postman safely helped the woman from her vehicle, which had its rear precariously balanced over a sheer drop, and we'd like to track him down so he can be thanked formally."

The woman had been trying to turn her vehicle round after a lorry in front had broken down and caused a build-up of traffic but she accidently backed her car over the edge of the road.

Matlock firefighters, who winched the car back into the road and made the area safe within half-an-hour, discovered the woman had been freed from the vehicle and was not injured.

The passing postman is urged to call Derbyshire Constabulary's roads policing unit on 0345 123 3333.

A postman has helped rescue an elderly woman after her car hung over a cliff edge in the peak district, Derbyshire.

A tree stopped the car from plummeting 60ft (18.3m) after the 79-year-old reversed her Renault Clio over the edge in White Tor Road, Matlock, on Monday.

The woman scrambled out of her car and the postman helped her on to the road as the car was hovering over the side.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue were called to recover the vehicle. A spokesman said she was lucky to escape unharmed.

Crew manger Greg Woodward said: "It was near enough a sheer drop.

"If that tree was not there, she would have gone down."

Police have managed to trace the postman to thank him for his help.
