Man finds 'junk' mail

An investigation was launched after a Wigan pensioner came across two satchelfuls of mail hidden under rubbish.
Rather than being stolen or lost, though, it later emerged that the bags had been deliberately left there for a postie to collect.

It is common practice for Royal Mail vans to leave bags at pre-arranged drop-off points when it is physically impossible for the postman or woman to carry it all in one go. But this should be done using only secure or supervised locations, such as a council office, so as not to jeopardise the theft of mail.

That certainly wasn't the case when 78-year-old Daniel Timson came across two bags hidden in the bin area of Douglas House, Scholes, the other day.

The retired lorry driver said: "I was putting some rubbish out just before going out when I spotted these two red bags with Royal Mail written on the side stuck underneath a piece of furniture.

"One of them was slightly open and I could see bundles of letters with elastic bands around them. There must have been hundreds of pieces of mail in the two bags.

"I told the concierges and the bags were put in an office for safe-keeping."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We take the security of mail very seriously and we have reminded staff of the procedures that are in place for handling mail prior to delivery."

It is not the staff that needs reminded, it is the managers who flagrantly let mail pouches be dropped off at unsecure locations and it is them that is putting the security of mail in jeopardy. Let them first get their own house in order before preaching to the masses.

Is that a grudging acknowledgement that we sometimes have to deliver more than one bag of mail or what! Wakey wakey that's a shock.

Until this week, my hybrid duty ( yipee, not ) started at 10, so I'd always miss the bus, and would have a manager take me and my bags out, They'd always want me to take them all out, I'd only accept my safe drop bags - I'd offer them to take out the others, but made it crystal that the drops weren't safe & that I was not going to take responsibility for them....they'd always say "You'd best phone the office 10 mins before you need that bag, then! :smug !

No, while I may have a mobile phone, I'm NOT using it to ring the office, it's up to them to arrange for the bags to be at a specific point at a specific time.
