*HELP* Serious question need answers BEFORE 10pm 19/05/09
Can a slow prep rate be classed as 'willful delay'?
I'm up tomorrow in front of the Assistant DOM for my formal interview with regards to my prep rate. Firstly I want to say I am a floater (so I cover 5 different duties each week) and I do the job as it should be done. Start at my proper time, take my break, don't use my car etc etc.
I was tested on one my runs on Friday 15/05/09. I left a handback of mail roughly about 30-40mins work. I left the office at 10.10am and had a 30 min break. So I started delivering at 10.40am The assistant DOM approached me 5 mins into the delivery and asked if he could follow me round. I agreed. I was finished delivering at about 1.45pm add the 10 mins left of my break takes me up to 1.55pm add another 10 mins on for the walk back to the office takes me up to 2.05pm. I am paid to 2.15pm on Thursdays and Fridays as we start 30mins later on a Tuesday. We were told we have 10 mins either side regarding 'handbacks' so hopefully I was kinda around the right time. When I got back to the office I was invited in the office for an informal interview. The assistant DOM told me he had no probs with my delivery side of things but it was my prep rate in the morning was the issue. He said if I had been quicker prepping the run I would of been out quicker and been able to delivery most of the 'handback' I left, if not all of it. According to his figures I should of been ready to go at 9.27am and I wasn't ready to go until 10.10am He said that was 43 mins I could of been delivering. Around about what I left as a 'handback'.
So basically it's the question at the top I need answered and pretty damn fast please! Any help is very much appreciated! Any advice or previous experiences are much appreciated. Preferably before I go to bed tonight!

Re: *HELP* Serious question need answers BEFORE 10pm 19/05/09
The prep side wasn't tested. He just used figures for the duty that I should of been working to. No one counted how many letters or packets I sorted that morning. In our office we use the volume of mail for the whole office and then it is calculated what each percentage of mail each duty gets. The prep times are used from this. As I said I was out at 10.10am and he said going by the mail for that day and the mail that the duty got I should of been our at somewhere around 9.30am
Dunno about putting in a grievance complaint as there was another person tested the same day. Unaware and also just the delivery side. There is also 3 other cases pending at present in our office from the last few weeks. Resulting in one of the guys going off with stress. The other has been dropped (I think) and the third is with higher management.
Thanks for all the help so far. Much appreciated.

I'm there 10 years in June mate. True what you say about the workplace coach he's right up the DOM's a*se! I haven't been trained by him or been giving any pointers by anyone how I could improve my prep.
Still would like to know if a slow prep rate can be classed as 'willful delay'?
Once again thank you for all the help and comments and so far.

Are you in the union?, this is what your rep is for .
If not then see him/her about joining pronto.
As an aside ,it is interesting to see many people bemoaning the union and spouting on about "what do we get for our money " and then at the first sign of trouble running to their rep.

Sounds like he's using the Indoor Workload Tool to time your prep. It's a crappy excel spreadsheet that some knob has knocked up. It's not realistic and not accurate. It is also not agreed by the Union. I've stood up in a team brief this morning and told the DOM it's a pile of shite and if he would like to give me a copy I'll prove to him how bad it is. I'm not holding my breath. Make sure you involve your rep. Do not see him alone.

Oh and I would imagine they can't class it as wilful delay as you made it clear that you didn't have time to finish your duty that day.

It sounds like the line manager is not up to the job it is up too him to identify and give training in your prep rate to be up too speed and the work place coach is not up to the job as well. Why would the DOM just ask to walk with you is he singling you out?.

Re: *HELP* Serious question need answers BEFORE 10pm 19/05/09
I doubt that a slow prep rate could be held up as wilful delay mate, once you get into the definition of the term.
'WILFUL delay of mail' implies that whilst it was within your capabilities to deliver all mail on time, you have taken a conscious decision not to do so, and then taken action to that effect. I'd take it to refer to a definite, provable action - something that you could get caught doing, like sticking mail back in a postbox.
To do you for wilful delay, your DOM will have to prove that you could be prepping faster, but you've chosen not to do so. Just tell him you're prepping as fast as you can, and then try and get him to prove otherwise.
The definition of the term must be in writing somewhere - ask your rep to try and get hold of it.

There was me and another guy tested on Friday by. There has been 3 others in the past few weeks. What we all have in common is we all leave handbacks and do the job right. If our prep rate was slow but we took all the delivery out and claimed overtime no one would test us then.
