Ellesmere sorting office closure - a done deal

ROYAL Mail will be closing Ellesmere's Delivery Office on June 8 in what was described by representatives as a "done deal with no turning back."
Meeting with Royal Mail representatives last week, councillors slammed months of speculation, during which they say they were kept in the dark over the plans for closure, as "cloak and dagger" tactics.

A wall full of papers with over 1200 signatures opposing the closure, concerns over late mail and criticism of the lack of communication did nothing to change the minds of the representatives.

Though they refused to reveal exact figures, Mr Dalton said the closure "would save a considerable amount of money," adding that the council would just have to take their word for it, "we are not allowed to lie, we are civil servants," he added.

Under the new arrangements delivery times will stay the same and undeliverable mail will be available from the Post Office during opening hours, instead of the two hour slot currently available at the delivery office.

Pearl Webster, Manager at Oswestry Sorting Office said the mail arrives earlier in Oswestry than at Ellesmere, and this extra time would off-set the delay in the vans travelling to Ellesmere.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Pat McLaughlin told the representatives: "We do not take things lying down in Ellesmere, people rally round and fight tooth and nail to keep services that Ellesmere wants-so be warned."

A public meeting will be held at the Town Hall on Wednesday, June 3 at 7pm.
