Slimmers shed pounds picking up posties' discarded elastic bands
HUNDREDS of slimmers are losing weight by walking miles, picking up elastic bands dropped by postmen.
Members of five WeightWatchers groups in Derby have been scouring the streets looking for the red bands, which are used to hold together bundles of mail.
The bands hit the headlines last month when Keep Britain Tidy said postal workers were littering the streets with them.
WeightWatchers leader Lyndsey Tanner came up with the idea to get members of her group to collect them in a bid to lose weight.
She said: "It was just an idea to get people moving. I tell the women that if they go out and collect them they'll walk as many miles as the postmen."
Lyndsey runs groups in Chaddesden, Allestree, Etwall, Mickleover and Allenton and estimates that a total of 250 women have been out collecting the bands.
Together, they have collected more than 1,000.
She said: "You don't realise how far you've walked when you're collecting them."
Among those to have benefited from the idea is Anne Lightfoot, who has been collecting the bands with her seven-year-old daughter, Stephanie.
The pair regularly take walks to and from the post boxes in Chaddesden, where they live, on the hunt for the bands and have collected about 30 so far.
The 33-year-old, of Reginald Road South, has lost 19lb since joining WeightWatchers eight months ago and said the added exercise had helped her in recent weeks.
She said: "It's a really quirky way of getting more active as a family.
"It's funny because you don't notice them until somebody says something to you and then collecting them becomes an obsession."
Keep Britain Tidy has received more than 10,000 elastic bands, collected by the public.
John Romans, a spokesman for Keep Britain Tidy, congratulated the slimmers on their efforts and said that he had not heard of anyone else who had collecting bands in order to lose weight.
He said: "It's a wonderful way for these women to improve their neighbourhoods and themselves. I wish them every success."
Anyone caught littering can receive an on-the-spot fine of £80.
A spokeswoman from Royal Mail said: "We regularly stress to our postmen and women the importance of avoiding litter and the vast majority of our rubber bands are recycled, with millions being re-used."

My god, 250 'slimmers' pounding the streets, and they collected 4 elastic bands each! They must have walked at least 50 yards!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
