Postal van hijacked in Sunderland

A POSTAL van was hijacked in broad daylight in a busy Sunderland street.

The shocked driver was dragged out of the van as he was making deliveries in the Barnes area of the city, detectives have revealed.

The driver was unhurt, but the white Ford Transit panel van and its contents have not been found.

The robbery happened in Cleveland Road at 9.10am yesterday.

Northumbria Police are investigating.

A spokesman said: "The driver of the van was seated in the vehicle when a man approached him, pulled him from the cab and then drove off in the van towards Chester Road.

"The van, registration NL07 MKG, was then driven on to Colchester Terrace."

The value of the contents of the vehicle – thought to belong to a contractor working for Royal Mail – has not been released.

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said the van, which was delivering in the SR4 postcode area, contained "a few items of mail" and police were told about the incident.

Detective Constable Liz Fairweather, based in Sunderland, said police wanted to speak to anyone who may have seen anything to do with the incident.

She said: "This was a frightening experience for the van driver, who was left shaken but uninjured following the incident.

"We are keen to speak to anyone who saw the robbery or saw the van afterwards."

The suspect was 6ft, stocky, with a shaven head. He had a red tracksuit top.
