Striking Dunfermline posties' fury after managers flown in as cover

STRIKING Dunfermline postal workers are furious after Royal Mail splashed the cash to bring in more than 80 managers from all across the country to cover their jobs.
More than 100 postal workers went on strike between 9am last Saturday and 1am Monday morning in protest at changes to mail sorting speeds and delivery times.
The CWU, the Communication Workers Union, feared the changes would cost jobs and lead to a reduction in the quality of service with eight voluntary redundancies having already being taken after changes were implemented.

Now they have been angered further after Royal Mail, who have been attempting to cut costs in the face of falling mail volumes, decided to ‘fly managers in’ from all over the country and put them up at the Pitbauchlie Hotel.

CWU Scotland No.2 branch secretary Willie Marshall said, “They spent a fortune flying them up and putting them in hotels. It made our members furious. A lot of these managers were members of the UNITE union breaking our strike. Royal Mail will say it is to give the public a service but it is just to make us look as if our strike was pointless but they are having to spend all this money doing that.”

Area delivery rep for Fife and Central, Mark Newton, said, “We had 100 per cent out on strike with around 30 on the picket line. To keep the ballot alive we have to take some sort of industrial action within 28 days. Feedback from our members was suggesting a full days strike in the future would be preferable.”
A Royal Mail spokeswoman said, “Royal Mail had very robust contingency plans in place in Dunfermline which did involve using managerial resource, of which the vast majority were from Scotland, which meant that all mail that was due for delivery on Saturday in the area was delivered.

“Royal Mail will use any contingencies necessary to deliver the mail to our customers. Collection sweeps were also carried out in line with our Universal Service Obligation. Despite the industrial action, therefore, we were able to minimise the impact on customers.”

It's going to be hard to get enough managers to cover all areas that are taking IA.
