POST office workers have staged a mass walk-out at Cardiff’s main sorting office.
May 8 2009 by Clare Hutchinson, South Wales Echo
The workers took unofficial industrial action against the Royal Mail over what they said were health and safety concerns at its Penarth Road sorting office yesterday.
Union branch secretary Amarjite Singh said: “We have taken unofficial action over a piece of equipment which they were trying to implement with-out any risk assessments.”
More than 50 workers gathered in the cold outside the warehouse for two hours before managers and union representatives came to an agreement and the strikers agreed to go back to work.
After talking with managers, it was agreed that the machine would be thoroughly checked for health and safety issues before bringing it into use at the Penarth Road sorting office.

Re: Mass walk-out at Cardiffs main sorting office.
A risk assessment is simply a careful examination of what, in your work, could cause harm to people, so that you can weigh up whether you have taken enough precautions or should do more to prevent harm. Workers and others have a right to be protected from harm caused by a failure to take reasonable control measures. Accidents and ill health can ruin lives and affect your business too if output is lost, machinery is damaged, insurance costs increase or you have to go to court. You are legally required to assess the risks in your workplace so that you put in place a plan to control the risks.
Well done to the CWU brothers and sisters mass walk-out at Cardiff's main sorting office
for putting health and safety at the forefront, even if they had to take unofficial industrial action to get their serious concerns addressed. And eternal shame on Royal Mail
for not carrying out a legal requirement in the first instance. Their often quoted "Nothing is more important to us as a business than the safety and well being of our people" came back to bite them nicely on their derriere.

"Today’s workplace has become heartless and soulless. Employees are seen as units of labour, automatons, functionaries, objects for achieving designated tasks, and as costs to be minimised."
