Dunfermline postal workers set to strike

POSTAL workers in Dunfermline are set to strike this Saturday after unions reacted angrily to Royal Mail’s decision to reorganise delivery operations in the area.
Workers voted in favour of industrial action from 9am on Saturday until 1am on Monday after claims from the CWU, the communication workers union, that the changes could cost jobs and lead to a reduction in the quality of service.

Eight voluntary redundancies were taken in Dunfermline after changes, involving delivery duties being equalised into three and a half hour spans, were implemented a week ago.

Area Delivery Rep for Fife and Central Mark Newton said, “They have already given eight early voluntary redundancies in Dunfermline with a couple more people leaving in June. Taking these people out of Dunfermline only makes the service worse for the public.

“We are going on strike due to unnecessary revision of our sorting and delivery system Pegasus. This is the second week that the new revision has been put in place that was not part of our previous agreement.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said, “With mail volumes falling by eight to 10 per cent year on year as a result of accelerating competition from the internet and email and the recession, it is essential that Royal Mail continues its drive to modernise and increase efficiency, while keeping our focus firmly on high-quality, customer service.

“To help meet this challenge Royal Mail has re-organised its delivery operations in the Dunfermline area and staff have been involved in this process. The reorganisation has been implemented and involved changes to delivery routes. However, the delivery span in which our customers receive their mail has not changed.

“Nobody is losing their job as part of this reorganisation and nobody is being asked to do anything that is not part of their job. With regards to the proposed industrial action, we will continue to talk to our people and the union in order to minimise disruption to our customers.”
