Postal services in Dundee look set to be disrupted next week, after workers at a city sorting office voted to resist changes to their working practices (writes James Williamson).
Staff at the Dundee West Delivery Office on the Dryburgh Industrial Estate have called for “action short of a strike” to register their opposition to new rules being introduced by Royal Mail.
It’s understood their action — which will include refusing to work overtime, and refusing to use personal cars for deliveries — is scheduled to start next Monday.

Workers are angry at changes to their delivery rounds, which will see them spend less time in the sorting office and more time making longer deliveries.

The new system is based on a set number of deliveries per hour, at a presumed walking pace of four miles per hour.

Staff at the Dundee East Delivery Office, on the West Pitkerro Industrial Estate, are currently taking part in their own ballot to decide on their response to the new regime. The outcome of that vote will be known later this month.

Willie Lawson, Communication Workers Union area delivery representative for the DD and PH postcode areas, said he had seen problems at first hand.

“Having been up at the east office for several days this week, we’re not in agreement with it, and, to be truthful, they are struggling.

“These are new deliveries, so there is a big learning curve. They’ve had managers in from across Tayside to try and clear the backlog.

“Management would like to think this is temporary, and I hope it is on behalf of the customers, but it’s happening all over the UK.

“They are trying to make savings, but we think the service is getting worse and they want to take more personnel out of deliveries.”

One postie, who has 15 years service, contacted the Tele anonymously to highlight the “massive problems”.

He claimed hundreds, if not thousands, of items had been going undelivered daily since the new practices were introduced on April 20.

“New ways of working are just not working properly,” he said.

“The new practices were introduced to my office last Monday. Since then it’s been one almighty mess.

“I feel its only right to highlight these massive problems as no one else seems to care and nothing seems to be coming from Royal Mail on these matters.”

The CWU claims Royal Mail is forcing the changes on its offices by executive action, without consultation with the workforce.

It hopes industrial action will bring bosses back round the debating table, so a national agreement can be worked out.

Workers in Perth and Edinburgh staged a one-day strike to register their objections last Friday.

Royal Mail has admitted it needs to be more “efficient” in the face of increased opposition, but stressed the company is only asking posties “to do their job”. No job losses are expected.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said, “With mail volumes falling by eight to 10% year-on-year as a result of accelerating competition from the Internet and email, and the recession, it is essential Royal Mail continues its drive to modernise and increase efficiency while keeping our focus firmly on high-quality customer service.

“To help meet this challenge Royal Mail has reorganised aspects of its delivery operations in the Dundee area, in line with changes across the UK.

“The reorganisation does involve changes to delivery routes and change such as this can take time to settle down. However, we are working hard to minimise any short-term disruption.

“None of our postmen or women are being asked to do anything that is not their job and the delivery span in which our customers receive their mail has not changed.”

Dundee West seems solid at the moment, I don't know what's happening in the East. I think management hope that people will revert back to normal practises. Meantime, the pressure's building and so is the backlog. Now in the public domain, so will be interesting to see the usual lies, deceit and contempt that RM have for the general public.

Dundee West seems solid at the moment, I don't know what's happening in the East. I think management hope that people will revert back to normal practises. Meantime, the pressure's building and so is the backlog. Now in the public domain, so will be interesting to see the usual lies, deceit and contempt that RM have for the general public.

Dundee West is not as solid as many of us would like!
Many of the part-timers are reverting back to the usual practices of not taking a break and taking out their cars. Some haven't even towed the line with one commenting "it costs me less to fill the car, than it would in bus fares!"
This isn't just a part-time thing, some full timers are at it also.
These people need to be told! This is not jst a short term problem, It goes way deeper into the future!

Agreed, but it will never be 100% as many people only have their own interests at heart. Sadly, they do not see the bigger picture. I witnessed a postie from DDW who had left a bag at the bottom of a block of flats and a bundle of mail on a bannister, who was RUNNING down a flight of stairs!! Where is the backing from the CWU by the way?? Our local rep is quoted in the local paper, but he was recommending the 4.5 hr delivery against any national agreement!! This whole scenario is a fecking shambles.

Some of the mailsort at Dundee West dates back to the day of implementation (April13th).
there aint no hope of it being sorted anytime soon either.

The packets are in the same position, with each sector driver having around 4-6 yorks each depending on your area.

What I meant was the actions of a certain number of so called union members, continuing to take cars, carry more than one bag at a time, carrying overweight bags, failing to take their meal relief and then having the audacity to complain about their walk!

It stinks of hypocricy and double standards.

Ah the rescession again! I knew it had to come in somewhere in this dispute!
