Scooting.

Post by andy2007 »

Is there anything in the SSOW about scooting?
If not, then what grounds do the Managers have, for an accusation of gross misconduct?
Even if it WAS a breach of the SSOW. The worst your Collegue should be facing (assuming his record is ok), should be a 1 year seious.

That's what someone at my office got, for breaching the SSOW. And his mistake, had the potential to put others at risk. Who exactly was your Collegue putting at risk, other than himself?

Also have these blokes ACTUALLY been given any rules and regs for riding bikes? Probably not so there is another line of defence. My advice is to give up the bike and use bag drops thus creating more work for drivers. :mad

How can you ride a bike without both feet off the ground?
Why is your Rep saying this as well - will he/she be representing your colleague?
Hope his hearing goes OK.

OK, let me see if I understand, someone was out doing a delivery which required a bike and during his delivery he took off his helmet and hi-viz vest and then 'scooted' his bike across the road :hmmmm A simple question is 'Why did he take off the helmet and hi-viz at all?' If I'm out on a bike, my helmet stays on my head and my hi-viz stays on me at all times (that way I can never run the risk of being conducted for not wearing them).

In our WTL sessions ,We have been told by managers and our union rep...Any body seen on delivery with both feet off the ground while on a RM cycle will face disapline which could and will lead to suspension and dismissal. We have two guys who are in that situation..One of the lads had "scooted" across a road and a passing manager saw him.Next morning he was suspended..And Charged with " GROSSMISCONDUCT " What a F'##k'n joke .He finds out tomorrow (fri 1st may) if he will keep his job.
I've heard of old style managers at RM but thats taking the water. Image

On a serious note if the brief was that you would be disciplined if you had 2 feet of the ground that is very unclear and IMO probably would not stand up in a tribunal, how are you meant to pedal. If he instructed against "scooting" RM case may be stronger but surely they would need evidence or independent witnesses.

The Gene Genie is back with an update.....He got SACKED !!!!! This is the story. My mate was seen leaving the DO without his helmet on.Next day he was taken into the office for a warning....that was at the start of the year..about 2 months ago ,while riding to work at 05.50 (start time 0600) a manager who was on his way to work saw my mate without his helmet on .so,he was taken into the office and the conduct code was thrown at him..."If your seen again without your helmet on you will be suspended and it will be pasted up to our DOM".. 4 weeks ago while on delivery,he had pust his last letter through on this particular road. The next call was across the road, some 20yrds away.So without thinking he jumped on his bike to cross the road .BIG F##k'N MISTAKE.....His line manager was passing in a hire van.The manager stopped and spoke to the postie.Next morning at 0600 ,he was taken into the office and suspended. He was told to leave his delivery pouches and bike and go home.5 weeks later he got the SACK .Gross misconduct. The union back the wearing of helmets and are powerless to save your jobs if you get caught without one....This is a stark warning to you all..Ask your own Reps and they will tell you.Don't forget that Full time members of staff are a BURDEN to RM we are costing them to much money in pensions and lump sums
Take care out there...RM is watching you xx

Erm, it is not law to wear a helmet so why is he persecuted for not wearing one in his own time????.

Your union rep sounds useless!!!!!.

But it is a conduct issue and knowing RM they'll say they went through all their rules before sacking this person (2 warnings in the past). I know that the conduct code is not to be used to punish but we all know that they will do anything to get rid of staff (I know that I've got to be very careful because of the trouble I've caused).

How come then that there has been no LTB on the union website or indeed any mention of this in the CWU VOICE magazine?

How can it be a conduct issue when he was not wearing a helmet in his OWN time.

Lets fire up the Quattro !!!! We have been told by management and our Union rep " While we are on RM cycles we MUST wear our helmet" even though we are in "our own time " as one of the posties who has read this forum says" The conduct code is there to make us improve and learn...WRONG ! We a getting f'n beatten by it.The conduct code is a tool to remove the guy on the street when your DOM has been told to save hours.. some of the lads have even requested 'trolleys' and bin the bike.. In our DO we have around 100+ walks and over 150 staff .All duties have a bike apart from 3 town rounds and 2 rural van duties

BRING IT ON !!!!!!

Just been reading some of your comments..This one you will like..A Rm cycle is a luxury !! it's means of getting you from your DO to your first delivery point..We have been given forms to sign regarding our RM cycles...Just listen too these terms and conditions...As when required you have to return you bike to the DO if your day off is the following day...Question ! How do i get home ? And how do i get to work after your day off ? Ans -Management don't even care.Your bike is a luxury... You are also responsible for your bike even when it is your day off !! But You don't have it ! so how can you ? This is the one though....You must always where a helmet when on a RM cycle...I've not signed this form, ive been asked twice but have managed to avoid it. :dance

:hmmmm Really easy, don't take the RM bike home, just go back to the office everyday and use your own transport to travel to and from your home.

You do NOT have to wear a helmet whilst riding a RM bike in your own time. The agreement ( unless it has been changed secretly ) clearly states that it is obligatory to wear one on delivery and is ADVISABLE to wear one whilst using the bike to travel to and from work. Ask your make-up-my-own-rules DOM to download you a copy.

mrlovepantsuk wrote:we all have to wear them in our office, apparantly it is rm policy that everyone wears them.

my view is that if a driver cant see me pushing a great big red trolley he shouldn`t be on the road anyway and if I am it whilst on a path I cant see how a hi-viz jacket will save me.
I'm surprised that some of the managers don't have Community Payback printed on the back of their Hi - Viz vests .
