Postal union plans strike over London Royal Mail job cuts

LONDON - The Communication Workers Union has announced it is balloting Royal Mail members with a view to take strike action in London over planned job cuts to the capital's workforce.

The CWU decision to call a ballot comes after Royal Mail announced it was planning a pay freeze.

The union said it has seen plans Royal Mail is to cut between 8% and 20% of staff across the country. The CWU said London would be hit the hardest with 1,600 jobs at risk.

Martin Walsh CWU London divisional representative said: "These are arbitrary cuts by management. There's no machinery coming in to help cope with the workload so these job cuts will have a bad impact on services.

"We're balloting our members across London for strike action to fight these cuts."

However, in a letter to the union Royal Mail's human resources director John Millidge said Royal Mail has been badly affected by the recession.

Royal Mail said the UK postal market is declining between 8% and 10% compared to a year ago. It said each percentage point dropped meant a decline of £7m in revenue.

yes mail realy going down i had 6 bags today quiet tuesday
cut off last bag as manager deliberately held us back due to mail volumes being low
spoke to an old postie today and he couldn,t believe how much we now take out

We had the mail's down talk in WTLL today, nobody belived it.

Only problem is IPS finishes earlier than it used to and we suspect that more mail is simply going through the machines leaving less to be sorted by hand.

yeah we have also noticed there is more trays of mail now - than before!!!!

IPS used to last around 90 mins in my D.O and now dosent go much over 60 mins, some days the IPS lasts less than 60 mins.

IPS depends on the day in my DO.

Monday - down 2 sorters - 1 hr 10 minutes
Tuesday - fully staffed - 45 minutes.
Today - 1 Down - 90 minutes + 10 on a late arrival.

IPS times being down just means more letters are now walk-sorted, we've gone from 2/3 bundles to 3/5 trays

The drop in IPS mail volumes is why my DOM wants to fill the next FT vacancy with a 20 hour PT and use the spare IPS time to withdraw 2 people to prep a FT delivery for the 20 hour person.

That's already happening in our DO - our sorters are down by at least 50% and the remainder are prepping other deliveries for part time starters - 4 new ones in the last 2/3 weeks - all 25 hours. The aim is apparently to make ALL town deliveries part time and rural park and loop with a longer delivery span - I don't know how other areas are faring obviously London hasn't been hit with the sh1t yet - latest rumour - even later start times - park and loopers now commence 0715 been suggested new time will be 0800 - how the last letter will be delivered according to the script God only knows and nobody seems to care.

We get between 60,000 and 100,000 items per day and this has always been the case for the last 5 years and before that it was less. Manager has figures for mail volumes for the office, so at the moment there is no major increase in mail but there is definately no sigificant drop in mail either.

Our IPS times are:

mon = 95mins
tue = 65mins
wed = 125mins
thur = 125mins
fri = 125mins
sat = 90mins

In most cases we run over - last fri took us 180mins for IPS very mundane
