The Royal Mail does itself no favours by creating the impression it is less than open about job losses.

Trust in the publicly run service's management is rock bottom in sorting offices and on rounds. Some 50,000 jobs have gone since 2002 and further painful modernisation and restructuring lies ahead.

Yet the Royal Mail has earned an unenviable reputation for being evasive.

We hope threatened strikes will be averted to avoid disruption to letters and parcels.

Union leaders might not like what they hear but bosses have a duty to be straight with the workforce..
