Hydrogen vans to be used by postmen in the Hebrides

ydrogen. Two vehicles using the green fuel are to be trialled in Stornoway in what is believed to be a first outside North America.
The delivery vans will have their engines adapted to use the clean fuel and will top up at a hydrogen filling station at the Creed Enterprise Park near the town where Western Isles Council has developed an innovative system to turn waste into biogas and hydrogen.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "We are planning to trial two vehicles in Stornoway, but we do not have any dates for their introduction at present."

Archie Campbell, the council's development chairman, said: "This is an exciting prospect. I hope that using Hebridean hydrogen for post vans will catch people's attention to what the council and others are trying to achieve with alternative energy."

He said as the council is playing a lead role in spearheading hydrogen technology the vans could also carry the authority's coat of arms. The vehicles are being provided by Cenex, the UK's first centre of excellence for low carbon and fuel cell technologies. The body is funded by government and aims to bring together UK organisations involved in specialist fields related to future fuels.
