UNION officials furious over the decision to shut Bishop Street sorting office have declared postal staff will never work in two smaller delivery centres planned for Coventry.

Mick Kavanagh, branch chairman of the Communication Workers Union, said if plans for the two sites were not improved members would consider taking industrial action.

Royal Mail confirmed last year it would be closing Coventry’s sorting office and opening a new centre in Northampton.

Plans for smaller delivery offices in the north and south of the city have been submitted to the council, one in the new Blue Ribbon industrial estate, in Foleshill Road, and one on land behind the former Courts furniture store in Orchard Retail Park, near Tollbar End.

The first plan is to be discussed by the council’s planning committee on Thursday while the second application was received by the council this week.

Mr Kavanagh said: “We have seen the plans for the Blue Ribbon one and they are totally unacceptable. We are not having members move into what can only be described as a shed.

“The facilities they are putting forward are totally unacceptable. There is not enough car parking space for our people and no restaurant or canteen.

“As far as we are concerned we will not be moving there. If we are going on the basis of what we are looking at in Foleshill Road the other plan will be similar and that is not acceptable.

“We are not moving to buildings lacking in facilities which will worsen our terms and conditions.”

He said he would be talking to members if planning permission was granted to discuss the possibility of taking industrial action.

CWU members have already taken strike action over the decision to close Bishop Street sorting office.

The city council has also spoken out about its disappointment over shutting the building. Deputy council leader Kevin Foster has also criticised the new plans to build a new delivery centre in the south of Coventry.

“The application is for a piece of land behind the old Courts furniture store in Orchard Retail Park. This is green land,” he said.

“We’re not happy about them closing Bishop Street in the first place but why use up green space rather than the empty buildings?”

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “The company is in discussion with CWU about plans for a new delivery office in the north of the city and acknowledged one of the union’s demands was for a free staff car park.

Regarding the plan for an office in the Orchard Retail Park to take up green land the spokesman said: “As well as a suitable building our delivery operations need a large area of space for operational vehicles, hence the need for a bespoke site.”

I think the point is, that they are being expected to move from a site which DOES have those facilities. Into one which doesn't.

No i think the point being missed is that RM have closed 1 site and haven't actually planned or got permission for where the new one will/may be.
Talk about planning ahead, i am truly stunned
if the council had any nuts they would make the f*ckers grovel and refuse the new building(s) and proposals. I mean look at how all interested parties repesenting local workers, residents, businesses and the like were treated by RM.
It appears to me that the business sent a suit to sit and watch these representatives speak, then went home of an evening, and it appears reported nothing of significance to their superiors.

I hope this dog comes to bite them on their fat lazy arses, i don't advocate sacking and people losing thier jobs but in this instance i do.
Having said that these slimey bast**ds have probably got Fred Goodwin as a financial adviser for golden handshakes.
