Fred Moss - Former General Treasurer of the ex UPW/UCW and National Honorary Member

It is with sadness and regret that branches are advised that Fred Moss, former general officer and National Treasurer has died following a period of ill health.

Fred joined the UPW in 1938; he started his long and distinguished career within the union as a Telegraph Boy Messenger and quickly became the Youth Section Officer of his branch in 1939-1941. Following his return from the armed forces he became Secretary of the then Metropolitan District Branch taking on the role of Branch Secretary of the newly formed Amalgamated London District P&TO Branch in 1948. Fred's Branch was known as the ALDIS Branch respected throughout the union. He held the position up until his election as General Treasurer in 1963.Fred had earlier been elected to the Executive Council of the UPW and combined his national duties with a formidable record of service to the Sectional and Full London District Council.

Fred, together with the late and equally distinguished National Organiser created history within the British Trade Union movement when in 1977 they were appointed to the Post Office Board as worker directors during the then Labour Governments industrial democracy experiment. As with so many other Trade Union benefits the experiment was abolished by the incoming Conservative government.

Fred retired in 1981 and within days set about assisting the essential fund raising for the Labour Party, he was the first Company Secretary of the Walworth Road Trade Union Management Company. His work for the Labour party, raising much needed funds and through the Walworth Road Company provided an efficient Headquarters for many years after.

On behalf of the union I have conveyed sincere and deep condolences to Fred's wife Sheelagh, additionally I have thanked her for the support she unstintingly gave to Fred as carried out his many duties and responsibilities on behalf of our members and for countless workers an their families in so many parts of the world.

Fred will be missed, but always remembered for his outstanding commitment to the union.

The funeral arrangements are as follows:

Monday 27th April 2009 at 12.30 p.m. The service will be held at the West Norwood Crematorium, Norwood Road, West Norwood, London, SE27 9JU.

The family have requested Family Flowers only; however, if you wish to make a donation in memory of Fred, the family would like you make it in favour of "Cancer Research". Mourners are invited to join the family at the wake afterward, which will be held at the Crown & Greyhound, 73 Dulwich Village, London, SE21 7BJ.
