Consult with the branches then, still gives the NEC the ultimate authority between conferences.

The government are not going to back down, the only way to stop their plans is through parliment voting against therefore why delay in our ballot?

Are we seriously suggesting that we still support Labour if parliment votes against the plans? There is no sign of the Tories voting against as the government will address their concerns on the detail of the proposals.

The whole idea we we might lose support is in my opinion absurd!

Are we saying that MP's are only supporting the EDM because of CWU money? I want MP's to vote against the government because they are convinced that is the right thing to do, not because weve bunged them a few bob here and there!

Are we saying that MP's will all of a sudden vote with the government simply because we choose not to affilate to Labour or make any extra donations at the next GE?

If the above is the case then we are on very dodgy ground indeed, sounds almost corrupt!

:Applause :Applause :Applause Absolutely. If the support of the MPs is so tenuous as to rely on the money we give in support then it is truly time for the ballot. Personally I think it is a lack of will on behalf of the leadership to actually carry out the wishes of the membership.

This thread is still on track and on topic!

We know from Dingo that there is vein of thought in senior CWU circles that holding the ballot now could lose support from Labour MP's, I dissagree and in my last post set out why the ballot should go ahead now!

If we didnt have Dingo on this site would we even know why the ballot has not yet gone ahead? The answer is a firm no!

In the absence of any offical communcations from HQ on this topic, a very strong impression is being created that somebody is dragging their feet. Could it be that some do not want to break the link at any point no matter what and scared that the membership will vote yes in a ballot to withhold funding and yes if there was a ballot for full blown dissafillation.

Voting yes to witholding funding is not voting to withdraw support from Labour, it is a warning signal! A ballot for full blown disaffiliation with a yes vote would be withdrawing support.
Its not exactly rocket science for HQ to put a communcation saying why we should hold off on the ballot for a few months say untill conference at which point conference can re vist the policy and lift the suspension on the ballot or modify the policy in some way.

HQ should have done this at the start of March and by the end of March enough feedback would have come back to enable the NEC to have avery clear picture of which way the membership wish to jump on the issue of when to hold the ballot.

We dont create policy saying such and such will happen by march and then ignore that policy with no offical explanation a month and a half later

Yet again we find ourselves having to take issue with slowness of Communications from CWU HQ.

Labour steels itself for annual battle with unions

This year there is the added flashpoint of the Government’s attempts to sell off part of Royal Mail. Expect the postal unions to step up their campaign after the parliamentary recess, but don’t hold your breath on the Communication Workers Union carrying out its pledge to sever election funds if the Government tries to sell part of Royal Mail. Not while the fight is still to be won in Parliament anyway.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

20th April

Still in the dark as to what offical policy is to take us from march to conference, so when a political contact asks me what the CWU are doing over their link with Labour, my honset answer is dont know!!!! :arrrghhh

It really does seem if we are going to be made to wait untill Conference to have a offical policy out in the open.

As soon as conference has considered all the motions for the CWU-Labour link our policy will be out in the open and HQ will not be able to lay their cards close to their chest.

How many times now has conference passed a motion saying we ballot the membership on withdrawing from Labour if such and such dosent happen and then such and such dosent happen and a ballot dosent go ahead?

HQ are in danger of becoming as bad as the Government by picking and choosing which parts of the offical policy of their Organisation they are going to follow!

I would have thought that most people by now have recognised that "the union" is nothing more than a nice little earner for those incapable of a political career because they lack the educational skills to carve out a political niche. There is always the fallback of the inept by saying that the R & F don't see the "BIG PICTURE" - one of the things I would be interested in seeing is how the expenses stack up against their political friends. You know what they say about laying down with dogs.

And the answer to your question linkin - is - NO....................... reality is not a pretty picture. There are many who cling on to the belief that "we are the union" when in reality we are merely the bankroll.

We can not with draw our support from Labour at the moment, what sort of message would that send out to the Labour MPs who are supporting EDM 128 if we were to do that? Yes we have been betrayed by those at the top,but we still have alot of support from labour MPs. Im not a political person but have always voted Labour, what is the alternative? There is none really is there, the rest are just as bad imho if not worse.

I think some people are missing the point of emergency motion E6 it was designed about ensuring we put the pressure on the labour party to stop us being privitised and to halt the crown office closure programme as someone who was instremental in both writing the motion and moving the proposition to conference it was done to put a gun against the heads of the labour party that they either support us and stop the privitisation or we will ballot our members over whether we fund the party at the next general election. The march deadline was finger in the air stuff as when the motion was written back last may we had no idea of the timeframe of the Hopper report or indeed the government bill and its timetable.

Imagine at the same time as we are meeting labour mps to ensure that they stand strong and dont get brought off by the whips that at the same time we commence the ballot on whether we fund them at the next election. What a great tactic that would be especially as a general election is at best 4 months away. We would be giving those MPs a way out. Remember the second reading of the Government bill in the house of commons is expected to be either the first or second week in June after the euro elections.

Beleive me those London Branch`s who put forward the motion will be demanding it will be actioned if we do not defeat the bill which is after all what the motion said but our ultimate aim is victory over the Government plans.

E6 was supported at last years confernece by the NEC and all but one branch of the conference.

Whereby a motion calling for the immediate disaffilation was defeated.

I agree that the NEC should have put something out to explian why there has been a delay and the GS promised to do so at meeting 4 weeks ago and I know people have sent him a reminder so hopefully an ltb will go out shortly.

Time to stop symbolic threats and empty gestures. If we can only count on people who are meant to represent us to do the right thing because they get a suitable financial reward then I'm not too sure these folks deserve our support;after all we will never be in a position to reward them as much as the Sainsburys and Murdochs or Deripraskas of this world
