habits wear and break down to all of us, everyone makes an error whether consiencely or sub-consiencely. recklessness comes out from a total disregard, i would not want to envisage that every postie leaves the engine running now, so it is not a common practice in behaiour so the wording reckless can be taken out from the equation unless the wording can be reinstated in managements role if it is a case of not having properly instructing trainees and new-comers into creating the security of collections and deliveries.

if there is a complacency in a 'it won't happen to me culture', then that will have to change. even if it is a pain in the arce and an inconvenience to the driver. albeit it costs money to restart an engine so may as well keep it running.. simplicity=keep all doors and enterances sealed and locked=no excuses

it's not job gone.. it's mail gone (whether recoverable or not). the primary principle is safeguarding of mail - taking all reasonable precautions against the loss, theft, removal and destruction of mail.

this is part of the complacency. its not a choice of key in pocket=job safe. key in lock=job gone.. the first responsibility is protection of mail and that comes from all parties from the top down, and not solely relying and hoping drivers have got the sense of not leaving doors open and keys in locks..

lol, google streetview does have a few pictures of these examples. and no doubt it still goes on today.

so any more stories of people driving off in royal mail vehicles via the original key or leaving a door or window open or having mail removed from a vehicle except by force is tantamount to negligence.
