Postie injured in bid to save van

A postman who tried to stop a thief stealing his van has suffered serious head injuries after being dragged along the road.

The victim had been making a delivery in Milnrow Road in Rochdale just after 0800 BST on Saturday.

He spotted the offender getting into the van and grabbed hold of the door handle, police said.

The thief managed to escape with his red Ford Transit van but abandoned it nearby and fled.

Det Insp John Mazzolai said: "The postman was incredibly brave in trying to stop this opportunistic thief from driving off and, unfortunately, his bravery has left him in hospital with a head injury.

"At this stage, I would like to hear from anyone who saw the theft or perhaps saw the Royal Mail van being driven erratically at about the time of the incident to come forward so we can find this man."

A BRAVE postman suffered a 'nasty' head injury after trying to thwart a thief who stole his delivery van.

He was hurt while being dragged along Milnrow Road, in Rochdale as he tried to hold onto the vehicle as it was driven away.

As he was recovering in hospital, detectives hailed the postie's bravery and appealed for help from the public to catch the thief.

Det Insp John Mazzolai, of Rochdale CID, said: "The postman was incredibly brave in trying to stop this opportunistic thief from driving off, and unfortunately his bravery has left him in hospital with a nasty head injury.

"I would like to hear from anyone who saw the theft or perhaps saw the Royal Mail van being driven erratically to come forward so we can find this man."

The thief was seen getting into the van while the victim was making a delivery.

In an effort to stop him, the postman grabbed hold of the door handle and was dragged along the road.

The red Ford Transit van was found abandoned nearby.

The thief was about 5ft 10in tall, chunky and with short dark hair. He wore a black zip-up jacket with a light-coloured t-shirt and black jeans.

In February, the MEN reported how a postman who had been sacked after his van was stolen was given his job back.

Brian Johnston's six-month nightmare began last July when he was making his rounds in the village of Crawshawbooth, Rossendale.

He parked outside a house and left the keys in the ignition while he posted a letter. A man and a woman leapt into the van and drove off. It was later found on its roof in a nearby field.Mr Johnson was suspended and later sacked by Royal Mail.

He was reinstated after an independent appeal tribunal.

I feel sorry for the injuries that have been received but I Agree with k979aaa everytime even if just for 1 letter 2 steps away from the van lock it, how many times do people need told.

Not just drivers but all posties all everybody has to do is to follow RMs own rules (keep the mail with you, turn off the van whenever you get out of it etc.) and if they discipline you then you have their rules to fight them with.

Thanks "brothermagrew" for posting this link now in our area we have too sign security of mails integrity documents too drive for royalmail and as such if the van got nicked it is highly unlikely that the driver would win his/her job back don't take a chance!.
