Dear Colleague
RE: Tariff Increase - Quadrant Catering - W/C 6th April 2009
We have received correspondence from the Head of Corporate Responsibility and Engagement Services informing us of their intention to increase certain items on w/c 6th April 2009. The business have explained within the correspondence that the effect on wholesale prices remains volatile. CPI hit a 16 year high of 5.2% in September and whilst this has now dropped back slightly to 4.5% inflation is still running at its highest level for a number of years. In addition to this the poor performance of the pound against the euro and the dollar is having an effect on imported goods including fuel, fresh produce and coffee.
At the last review Quadrant were able to hold the prices of breakfast and beverage tariff items. Since then these items were reduced in line with the reduction of VAT levels. It is the business' intention to increase the cost of these items back to the pre VAT reduction levels only and a copy of the items and effect on prices is show below:
Tariff Proposals 6th April 2009
Current Price Proposed Price Increase
Bacon 39p 40p 1p
Egg 39p 40p 1p
Hash brown x 2 39p 40p 1p
Hash brown x 3 59p 60p 1p
Sausage 39p 40p 1p
Standard coffee (canteen)44p 45p 1p
Large coffee 49p 50p 1p
Standard tea (canteen) 39p 40p 1p
Large tea 44p 45p 1p
Vended cappuccino, Latte & Mocha30p 35p 5p
Cans standard (canteen & vended)65p 70p 5p
It is Quadrant's intention to start a campaign of customer communication informing customers of the issues we are facing in terms of increasing food prices, as well as highlighting competitor pricing and demonstrating why they still offer real value for money.
It will be our intention to place a document to the Postal Executive noting the changes and not agreeing them. If the branches wish to make any comments regarding the above increases please contact my department by Thursday, 12th March 2009.
Any enquiries to Ray Ellis's office, quoting reference PTC/MA/dj/018.

What's a canteen?
It's cheaper to go to McDonalds for something (and probably cheaper).

I guess I had better get up 10mins earlier and do myself a packed lunch and buy myself a flask. You are right disgruntled it is cheaper to go to McD's, even the local corner shop sells stuff cheaper than the vending machines.

You can get a 6 pack of Coke/Pepsi for less than £3 in a supermarket, so why would you want to pay 70p per can out of a vending machine.

Re: Tariff Increase Quadrant Catering W/C 6th April 2009
I stopped using our canteen in Glasgow MC many moons ago. Although I dont like to think that falling custom will affect peoples jobs in Quadrant there comes a point when enough is enough...the people that run part of Quadrant, Granada, are well known for their extortionate prices to a acaptive audience, motorway service stations etc.. No wonder more and more people are taking their own lunches to work.
HASTA LA VICTORIA SIEMPRE ! ! !

Re: Tariff Increase Quadrant Catering W/C 6th April 2009
As the sole supplier they can charge what they like - bearing in mind the VAT went down and so did their price to reflect this they are soon changing their tune and when VAT goes back up - they certainly won't be leaving the price the same. I e-mailed HQ about the limited choice from vending machines because all that was offered was crisps and chocolate and they more or less said that it would be a shame to do away with Quadrant because it would cost jobs - however they are not competetive and outside caterers are cheaper. Canteens are subsidised but you can hardly say the same for vending machines.

The 'resturant' in my workplace is currently making the grand total of £17 a day. The woman who works there has done everything she can to drive away the customers in order to get EVR.

Rising prices are a fact of life. Unlike pay rises.Shame RM don't take this into account when they stitch up again this year.
