I was having a read through the Candidates biographical details for the PEC elections that are currently running,when the figure of 32,000 non members working in the business caught my eye Why are that many people employed by Royal Mail not in the union? That needs to be sorted out a.s.a.p. as strength in numbers is crucial and could send out the wrong message to management.If any one on this site is not in the CWU then join right now its the best move you will make.

Couldn't agree more. I was not in the union for my first 18 months with RM but after management treating me as a mug I joined and it was the best decision i've made since joining RM.

Posties really need to join the CWU, there is so much going off at the moment. All it takes nowadays is someone to say or do the wrong thing and they are either suspended or dismissed. Some posties think that they don't really need to join the union because they will never get into any trouble, but you never know.

You really need to be in the union, managers are like politicians "LIARS" so it's best to have your rep with you whenever you are taken into their office as i have discovered.

It used to be that during your training period you would have a session with a Rep or Branch Officer
who would explain why you should join the CWU and usually sign you up on the spot.
Today there is little or no training and Reps/Branch Officers don't have immediate access to new
starters, so unless they track them down, come across them, or the new starter looks for a Union
Rep/Officer, it is unlikely that they will be signed up.
This is particularly true of the new PT staff (which are the majority of new starters these days),
and is the reason why there are so many non-members.
The CWU nationally and locally needs to get agreements to meet new starters during their first week.

Yep when i joined we had a talk from the the mail centre rep at the induction course, and was introduced to the unit rep my first day in my D.O, who asked if i'd already joined.

Their is a lot of new partime worker's now on half the wage of full time workers and £2.92 a week is a lot for them maybe they should pay sub's pro rata so a worker on 20 hour would pay £1.46 and the union would defend our hour's for then it would be in their interest too!.

Our WPC is not a member of the CWU.

Is this introduction to the C.W.U a new thing? When I first started with R/M,and having waited a few weeks before approaching the rep. to see about joining, I was told they were not allowed to make the first approach.

Our Branch Secretary is allowed to address all new entrants, in private, on their first induction day then I approach new entrants on the first day of training in the DO.

I have no official CWU position I am just an ordinary member but when I see someone new at my DO I bend their ears and give them an application form. TBH anyone who is in the Union should be able to approach new starters and advise them of the benefits of joining the CWU as I am sure RM will advise them of any of the pitfalls.

maybe the 32,000 non members ar'nt as stupid as the rest of us. they could know that the money they pay to the union will keep the high and mighty riding even longer on the gravy train.
