A postman will face a Crown Court trial after he denied stealing or delaying nearly 70,000 items of mail.

Richard Appleby, 36, of Ipswich, Suffolk, entered not guilty pleas at Ipswich Magistrates' Court.

He was released on unconditional bail ahead of his appearance at the town's Crown Court on May 8.

AN Ipswich postman is due to stand trial at Ipswich Crown Court accused of stealing or delaying nearly 70,000 letters and packages.

Richard Appleby, of Cauldwell Hall Road, is charged with theft of 916 postal packets of an unknown value between April 19, 2004 and November 7, 2008.

The 36-year-old is also accused of delaying 61,487 postal packages and 6,874 items of junk mail between the same dates.

Appleby appeared before Ipswich Magistrates today for his case to be committed to crown court.

He had pleaded not guilty at a previous hearing during which it was said that he no longer worked for the Royal Mail.

Appleby is now scheduled to appear at Ipswich Crown Court on May 8 for a pleas and case management hearing.

He was released on unconditional bail until then.
