A SECURITY blunder is being investigated after the keys to a van carrying government mail were left dangling out of its back door.
A motorist who spotted the keys said the contents of a Government Car and Dispatch Agency van, which bore the reassuring slogan “Government Mail Trusted to Deliver”, could have been free to plunder as it stopped at traffic lights on Maes-y-Coed Road, Heath, Cardiff.
Noel Thompson, 34, and his wife, Claire, 30, noticed the apparent security lapse as they stopped behind the van at traffic lights.
In the wake of a series of recent security problems with Government records, including the loss of two data CDs containing the details of millions of child benefit claimants in the post, the couple, of Fairwater, Cardiff, captured the image on a mobile phone.
The father of one said: “I was out and about with my wife and I pulled up behind traffic. My wife said ‘are there keys in the back of that van?’ So we took a photo of it. I couldn’t believe it.
“When I’ve heard in the past about people’s details going missing I’ve found it shocking. They need to be a bit more careful in what they are doing.
“What I can’t work out is how the driver managed to drive the van with the key still in the back door.
“When you read what’s written on the van and look at the keys in the back door you wonder what could have been in the back of that van.
“It’s quite shocking considering all the incidents of missing data that have gone on.”
A Government Car and Dispatch Agency spokeswoman was unable to confirm the contents of the van,
She said: “We take security extremely seriously. This incident will be investigated as a matter of urgency.”
