Petition forces Royal Mail to redeliver parcels

A COMMUNITY is celebrating victory as Royal Mail was forced to redeliver packages after deciding to close a sorting office.

Villagers collected more than 2,000 signatures on a petition organised by Wokingham Without parish Cllr Pauline Helliar-Symons against the closure of the sorting office on Kings Road, Crowthorne.

It faced the axe following an efficiency review, meaning people wanting to collect parcels would have to travel to the Western Industrial Estate in Bracknell.

Now the Post Office has agreed to return all undelivered post to either of the two post offices in Crowthorne, and waive its normal 50p charge for the service.

Crowthorne Parish Council chairman Cllr Tina McKenzie-Boyle said: “It’s a victory for Crowthorne because the sorting office may go. However, in negotiations they have undertaken to ensure all deliveries that need to be delivered go to the Post Offices in the village so people have two opportunities to pick up their mail.”

With one simple phone call people will be able to call the sorting office in Bracknell and arrange for their package to be dropped at either the station Post Office or the one at 188 Dukes Ride.

MP Andrew MacKay said: “I am delighted that at last some progress has been made. While it is inevitable there will be some disappointment that the office is still to close it does seem a reasonable compromise, with people being able to collect their post and parcels from two separate points without being charged 50p as was originally suggested.

“Well done to the Parish Council, not least because of its petition which I am sure made a difference. I know the residents will be relieved, especially those who don’t have their own transport to get into Bracknell.”

A Royal Mail spokesman confirmed the arrangements were being put in place but was unable to confirm a date for the relocation of the sorting office, or when the new service would be brought in, but it is hoped that this will be in May.

Unless RM are paying the 2 post offices for this and have got extra staff to cope - wait for the complaints about queues at both offices.
