POSTAL delivery rounds across North Staffordshire have been altered in a move that has seen five jobs cut.
Royal Mail says delivery times may be slightly altered in the ST1, ST2, ST4, ST9 and ST12 areas as part of the changes to postal rounds in the region.
The company says the alterations were because of a rise in residential and business premises but the Communication Workers' Union believes they were a cost-cutting measure.
Area delivery representative Malcolm Brundrett said the changes, brought into force on Monday, will mean some people receive mail later and postmen and women will face longer rounds.
He said there had been five voluntary redundancies as a result of the changes.
He said: "Royal Mail has involved the union all the way along, but any revision is only done with a view to the business saving money and making cuts.
"Every delivery will be changed in some way, but we will have to wait and see how it impacts.
"With any job cuts that come along the work doesn't go away, the people do, and therefore the job gets longer for those who remain."
A Royal Mail spokesman said there might be longer delays to mail in the short term as staff training takes place.
He added: "We would like to ask customers for their patience and forbearance during the initial bedding in period and offer our assurance that these changes are being made to make sure customers receive the most efficient postal service possible.
"The changes are being made due to the growth in both residential and business premises in certain parts of Stoke-on-Trent in recent years that has made several delivery routes much busier than others."

I have to agree with you K66yla. I've never heard of a business sacking people (oops sorry, voluntarily retiring people) because the workload has increased.

I have always understood redudancy or early retirement as being these jobs have ceased to exsist?
I no nothing of the local situation,but would put money on RM brining in Agencey or new RM staff on 1 hr a week contracts,is this legal hiring staff withing weeks of voluntary redudancy ,have seen it happen before?
