Second class service for charity mail

A CHILDREN’S charity has had vital mail go astray a little over a year after it was previously hit with the same postal problems.

In November 2007 all mail addressed to children’s charity River Kids had been returned to sender because Royal Mail workers thought it was for defunct radio station River FM.

The charity and radio station were both based in Livingston’s Stadium House before River FM went out of business.

The mistake meant post, including many cheque donations, had not been arriving at River Kids’ office for months.

The charity works to raise funds to provide a purpose-built play area for sick kids at St John’s Hospital in Livingston and for other needy kids in West Lothian.

And now it seems the problem has returned after River Kids coordinator, Wendy Simpson, was contacted by her bank to ask why statements and chequebooks were being sent back to them.

Wendy said: “They say that lightening does not strike twice but it appears it does with us.

“They have returned bank statements and cheque books to the Bank of Scotland.

”It has taken a lot of time and effort to sort out. It’s very important, as a charity, that we have our bank statements so our books can be audited.

“Other people have also called me to find out what is wrong as they have had mail returned.

“They are causing me problems and wasting my time and money.”

Wendy was so angry about the mail mess that she arranged a meeting with the sorting office manager.

She claims he promised to monitor her mail and phone her each week with a list of the mail she should have received.

But Wendy says she has never heard from them since the monitoring was put in place.

She added: “They told me in February that they would photocopy all the envelopes and phone me to see if the mail I was receiving matched what they had.

“But it has been in place for four weeks now and I’ve never had a call.

“The only time I’ve had contact was when I phoned them to find out what was going on.

“I’m not a happy camper with Royal Mail at the moment.”

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said staff at the sorting office were well aware of the problem.

She said the company would continue to monitor River Kids’ mail and apologised for the lack of contact with the charity.

She said: “We get hundreds of pieces of mail a day for businesses at Stadium House and we don’t separate them into individual bundles.

“We deliver this mass bundle to the reception who dish it out to the individual businesses and there could be a problem there.

“We’re not trying to pass the buck and will continue to monitor River Kids mail to see that the customer gets their mail.

“We are going over and above what we would normally do as we want to help.

“Until we complete the monitoring we can’t say what is happening.”

It's really easy to sort out, all mail for River Kids is prepped separately and then delivered to them by the postie thereby eliminating any possibility that reception is sending it away.
