Anything to back that assertion - only asking as most polls I have seen are at least 51% and usually greater against part privatisation. Asking because I like to post balanced reports and despite looking cant find any that show a majority supporting the Governments position.

Grateful for any links as well, so I can post them up or you can if you prefer.

CWU came up with 89% based on 1000 polled as far as i know but they asked these people directly. Thats ok if everyone was engaged and every one signed a petition but you know it and I know it, they won't. Neither does it follow that because the whole country favours something that it becomes law or even lawful (think hanging) or that they will even act on it. Most people I talk to outside of work are just not interested and most don't give a monkey who delivers the post either. Its a weak barganing tool - not enough concrete evidence. People have their own problems to worry about.

I think it's clear now that any British government, present or future, will bow to the will of its masters in Brussels, which is to destroy Royal Mail. If anyone takes a look at how the EU works, that is one little bite at a time, then it's easy to see how that same pattern will apply here. The name of the game has always been centralized control by stealth.
It would of course have been unpopular and intolerable for NuLab (or the Torys) and the EUSSR to close down Royal Mail and hand over the whole caboodle to their mates at TNT in one nut-crunching step. It's better first to create an uneven playing field, to undermine and destabilize Royal Mail until it simply cannot survive. Make it look like demise by market forces. Sell-off and closure of national postal services are great ways of achieving the long term aim of a single European postal service. Watch it happen elsewhere.
The EUSSR (sorry, can't resist that little joke) is not about choice or diversity. It's about mega-corporations and their tame politicians conspiring to share the trough which we have to keep filling. Do you really think they would allow the existence of a service called the ROYAL Mail in a country called EUROPE?

Brilliant
TNT/Royal Mail/Singapore post are already in buisness together as joint owners of Spring Global Mail , based in the Netherlands. look at the gallary page , watch the videos http://www.thinkjessica.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to see how they are turning a blind eye to scam/criminal mail that is pouring into the UK..
It has the Royal Mail P.P.I so the posties dont even know it is scam mail from abroard.
TNT ARE PROVING TO BE A LOAD OF CROOKS.

Lets get everyone who has signed the Think Jessica Petition to sign this petition as well and pass it on and on and on!!

I have just been informed, that postmen in the UK can object to deliver BNP leaflets under an agreement with the union.
Can someone please clarify, as I will not support a policy which is non democratic.
If all political parties are respected equally by Royal Mail and its unions, then I am more than happy to sign this petition.

Its official BNP Policy to be against privatisation anyway, However to clarify there is a conscience clause agreed with Royal Mail that Posties can approach their managers and refuse to delivery any political election material if they feel unsafe doing so, or as a result of personal beliefs or circumstances the feel unable to do so they should approach their manager.
6) Special Circumstances

It is jointly recognised that Royal Mail has a legal obligation to secure the delivery of election material for all nominated candidates and parties.

Whilst it is expected that delivery will be made by the individual due to undertake the particular delivery, local management will deal sensitively and sympathetically with genuine requests to deviate from this arrangement.

Such cases may arise as a result of personal circumstances or beliefs or where an individual believes that delivery of a particular item may incur personal risk.

If such instances arise alternative measures will be used to secure delivery. These may include the use of volunteers from within the office or neighbouring offices to cover more than one delivery or, as a last resort, the use of supplementary resource.

Both parties undertake to co-operate fully in the application of these principles and in resolving any difficulties that may arise surrounding the delivery of election material.
The above quoted section is the agreement and in no place does it say just the BNP it can be used in any circumstance or party that fulfils the criteria you can refuse to deliver them as long as you tell management and explain why.

Also all the outcry about posties refusing to deliver BNP leaflets is a bit of a storm in a tea cup as Royal Mail still have a legal obligation to get the leaflets delivered so perhaps both sides of the Political divide on this issue are using Posties for their own reasons.

Interesting that the first question at today's PMQ's was from Paul Rowen (Lib-Dem, Rochdale) asking the PM to reconsider government policy on Royal Mail privatisation.

The Lib-Dem's were in favour of 50% privatisation of RM, not the 33% proposed by the Labour government.

Was talking to our Branch Sec. last week who reckoned that, as always, Lib-Dem policy was moving not on principle but on public opinion, and that they were now veering towards an anti-privatisation policy. Looks like Mr Rowen has led that charge to the other side of the fence!

Anyone have more substantial info on this implied change of policy?

Voting for any of the parties (major ones or not) will serve no purpose in defeating privatisation during the EURO ELECTIONS. Privatisation of Royal Mail is a UK Parliament issue and voting for a party on 4 June based on just that one issue IMHO would be a wasted vote as none of those elected will have any influence at all on this issue.

That's only from a Government sponsored web site, I'm sure the people who signed standard petitions/attended meetings/contacted their MPs are much more numerous.

Royal-Mail-Sale - epetition response

We received a petition asking:

“We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to reject any part privatisation or minority stake sale of Royal Mail which could lead to loss of service, price hikes and would erode a much loved public service.”

Details of Petition:

“A petition to keep a much loved public service fully intergrated and wholly in the public sector.”

· Read the petition

Read the Government’s response

Thank you for your e-petition.

The Government wants to secure the universal postal service and for Royal Mail to provide modern services to meet today’s customers’ needs. The Government commissioned an independent review of the postal services market from Richard Hooper which was published in December 2008. The purpose of the review was to assess the impact on Royal Mail, other carriers and consumers, of liberalisation of the UK postal services market, to explore trends in future market development and the likely impact of these and to consider how to maintain the universal service obligation in the future.

The Hooper report concluded that the status quo in the postal market was untenable and that if change did not occur, the universal service which is the cornerstone of the postal system would be under threat.

The Hooper review identified a number of key areas in which the Royal Mail is inefficient. These included expansion and diversification of products and services; its network structure of mail centres and delivery offices; and its existing working practices. What is needed now is real action from Royal Mail’s management and the unions to take forward Royal Mail’s transformation plans. These plans include the introduction of new machinery to sort the mail and some 27,000 handheld tracking devices have been issued to record the delivery of Special Delivery and other tracked mail.

The Secretary of State announced on 1 July that market conditions in the European postal sector have made it impossible to conclude the process to identify a partner on terms that we can be confident would secure value for the taxpayer. This has been a priority for the Government and it would be irresponsible to proceed unless we had such confidence that the taxpayer received a good deal.

There is, therefore, no prospect in current circumstances of achieving the objectives of the legislation the Government introduced to Parliament in March. However, the Government firmly believes that the implementation of all of the elements of the Hooper Review recommendations is the best way to secure Royal Mail’s future and to maintain the universal postal service. When market conditions change we will return to the issue.
