THE Treasury has confirmed it has appointed consultants to look at whether the Royal Mint could be privatised.

The Mint, based in Llantrisant, is one of a number of organisations the Government is considering selling in a bid to plug huge gaps in public finances.

In a parliamentary written answer, Treasury Minister Angela Eagle confirmed the appointment of “external advisers to support the review of the strategic options for the Royal Mint.”

Plaid Cymru MP Adam Price said: “This is the first time the Government has admitted formally that the sale of Royal Mint is on the cards, even though they would provide no details of how and what they plan to do with the Mint.”

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

they wanted to privatise it about ten years ago. nothing much been said about it since. think the production of the euro halted it

The Royal Mint does not reveal exactly how much it costs to make specific coins as such information could be used to its competitors' advantage.

http://www.walesonline.co.uk/business-i ... -23162561/

With their high copper content, the intrinsic value of pre-1992 1p and 2p coins increased with the surge in metal prices of the mid-2000s, until by 2006 the coins, would, if melted down, have been worth about 50% more than their face value.(To do this, however, would be illegal, and they would have had to be melted in huge quantities to achieve significant gain.) In later years the price of copper fell considerably from these peaks.

in other words, alistair darling's idea to sell it off. 1000 people work at the mint. has to do with saving production costs innit. nowt is safe in this country..

The Royal Mint exists principally to mint coins for circulation in the UK. However, it also manufactures and circulates coins for over 100 other countries, mints collectors' coins, and produces military medals and civilian decorations for the British armed forces and orders of chivalry. The Mint also produced coins for Canada until 1908 when the Royal Canadian Mint was established.
So no licence to print money :shhhhh

But plenty of scope to flog commemerative coins and medals :Very Happy
