I was suspicious when I saw letters for Gordon Brown and TV star Kyle

STUNNED postmaster Roger Cairney had to evacuate his shop yesterday after a man gave him “suspect” mail addressed to Prime Minister Gordon Brown and TV talk show host Jeremy Kyle.

Mr Cairney told the Paisley Daily Express he was warned by Special Branch officers over a week ago to keep an eye out for dodgy-looking letters and packages.

The warning followed an incident earlier this month when it was claimed a number of letter bombs were sent to people including First Minister Alex Salmond.

Shocked customers were evacuated from the sub-post office at Lochfield Store, Lochfield Road, Paisley, at around 9.30am.

Mr Cairney, who took over the shop three years ago, said: “Special Branch officers told me if I came across anything I thought was suspicious to call them. One of the letters was addressed to Gordon Brown and another to Jeremy Kyle.

“The man who wanted to post the letters was in the queue, but he wasn’t speaking to anyone the way customers usually do and his cap was pulled over his eyes. He was in his early 30s, and isn’t a regular customer.

“I took three envelopes off him, and when I saw the names on two of them I phoned the police. Normally I would have put this mail through, but after the Special Branch visit I thought twice about it.”

Marie Neilson, who has worked at the shop for six years, said the man looked out of place and anxious to her.

She explained: “I was talking to an older gentleman in front of him, and I could see he was shifting about from one foot to the other.

“Usually, in the shop, everybody has got something to say, so something about him didn’t quite fit.”

Yesterday the shop – which is around 100 yards from Lochfield Primary School – was cordoned off and was guarded by officers from Strathclyde Police as they waited for the support unit to arrive.

The shop is next door to houses and sits on a busy main road – despite this, Buddies were still able to pop their mail into the letterbox outside and the postman collected mail for his round while the alleged suspect letters were still inside the store.

At 11.30am police specialists from the support unit had arrived on the scene and went into the shop with a large black container.

Officers in charge came back out 20 minutes later and told Mr Cairney they had cautiously opened the letters.

He told us: “The police said they are concerned about what is in there. They opened the letters and are concerned about the content of them.”

Who was the third letter addressed to :hmmmm If it was Robert Kilroy Silk then it would've been really suspicious :chuckle

Any postie worth their salt would've known how much the postage would be and would've just put the relevent stamps on them (but not too many  ) and dropped them into a postbox.
